The wordinistas at Merriam-Webster have spoken, and their word of the year for 2006 is:

250pxcolberttruthiness

The Colbert-coined term beat out the rest of the field by a factor of 5-1. Other candidates included:

Google
Decider
War
Insurgent
Terrorism
Vendetta
Sectarian
Quagmire
Corruption

What nominees were left off the list? Whither "macaca" or "sugartits"?

Regardless, congrats to Stephen, who sent this missive to the word police:

"Though I'm no fan of reference books and their fact-based agendas, I am a fan of anyone who chooses to honor me.

"And what an honor. Truthiness now joins the lexicographical pantheon with words like `squash,' `merry,' `crumpet,' `the,' `xylophone,' `circuitous,' `others' and others."

In response to Calvin C. remarks on Canada, I love my country and I am tired of Canadians thinking that it is better on the other side, if you like the US so much why don't you move there.

Me thinks Charlene is a little anal retentive.

Dearest Stephen,

If I were not married I would chase you all over the globe. And that's the Truthiness.

Congratulations on having "truthiness" named as Word of the Year 2006. Now that you've mastered that honor, how about a little grammar truthiness? On the 12/13/2006 show, during "The Word" segment, the Chyron displayed the following: Lips Say "No", But Racial Profile Says "Yes" —

Oops!— Let's do a little 8th grade grammar review: Periods and commas ALWAYS go inside quotation marks. If you don't want to believe me, check out these links:

I adore Stephen Colbert (and stay up way too late watching the show) for 3 reasons: 1/He's a proud Southerner from a large family (as am I); 2/He is intelligent, funny, and doesn't have an accent like Larry the Cable Guy, thus demonstrating that all of us do not speak like hicks (see Viven Leigh in "GWTW" for another example of a stupid Southern accent); 3/He often uses my name, "Charlene," in various bits (for what reason I cannot imagine). Once we get this little grammar snafu fixed, Stephen may well be his way to achieving his undeclared goal as a candidate for President in 2008. I'll certainly be glad to be a grass roots organizer here in Raleigh, North Carolina, or my home town of Atlanta! Continued success to all of you!

Dear Mr Colbert,

Mr Colbert ,just thought I would drop in to to tell you the "whole truth" about some of the comments made by one of your guest's last night ."Yes,"Canada does have universail health care .But ,the truth is it takes on average of four to five hours to see a doctor ."Yes",Canada does have strong gun control ,which has cost us Billions of dollars to implement when our government said it would only take millions.(Thank God, the crimanals now have to register thier Fire Arms)"Yes " we have guy marriage ,and since then the country has been so divided it has literally split familys apart .

A couple of things ,your guest should be aware of."No" ,we have not decriminalized canibas ,so tell Cheech and Chong to stay home .And, another thing that liberal values have given us ,"The birth Of the separtist movement ".As you know Canada has ten provinces and three territories .Out of thease we now have three out of ten that have over forty percent of the vote for Separtation( And,thier very own political Partys ).Yes ,our country is truely blessed .I would have to say that the greatest thing about this Canada is the fact that we are on top of the greatest nation on earth (Geographically of Course),Americia .So God Bless America ,long may she Regien .

Calvin C
