Last night, love for David Cross combined with sadness at Hot Tub leaving Comix led people to physical violence at the show's close. A short and oddly civil brawl slightly marred an otherwise amazing show.
I spoke to a young lady involved in the fracas and apparently a young man didn't like their loud appreciation of Eugene Mirman, Rhys Darby, and David Cross, and when words were exchanged at the end of the show the young man decided that the only truly gentleman-ly thing to do was to attack the lady.
On to the show – I'm saying it out loud for all the blogosphere to hear: Kristen Schaal is my favorite NYC comic to watch and work with! Kristen and Kurt's Hot Tub is truly a variety show – along with great comedy there were hoola hoops, a little musical comedy, and a short by Kristen and Kurt (which they've promised to give me a link to when it's online.)
More show review after the jump
It was a sold out crowd for the final Hot Tub at Comix. Kristen and Kurt warmed up the crowd and it was off to the races! It was my first time seeing Eugene Mirman live, and he's just as great as the stuff of his I've seen online and on the CD/DVD of his show Invite them Up. My only complaint was that the set was too short! Rhys Darby made his USA debut and did a short set combining his comedy and sound effect skills. Other highlights of the night included some hoola hooping, a short musical comedy from the Story Pirates, and the aforementioned Kurt and Kristen short. David Cross finished up the night with a solid set – a mix of funny observations of his day and some new material. It was my first time at Hot Tub, and now that I've lost my virginity you can be sure I'll be there again and again whenever they find a new home.
(If you've got a show you think CC insider should be at let us know!)
I love a good comedy club fight!
