VH1's experiment in interactive sketch comedy, Acceptable.TV debuted on Friday to a resounding "meh" from some snooty critics. Though not all of the bits work off the bat, the show has potential. even if Channel 101 predated the gimmick a while back That's because it's backed by the Channel 101 crew, who've been at the vote 'em off episodic comedy format for a while. Let's not forget what magic they can weave by merely riffing off of the corporate conference call.
(Reactions and super power poll after the jump)
Variety sums it up the Jack Black-produced pilot:
"Not that there's anything wrong with being juvenile, of course. It's only the unfunny that's unacceptable, and judging strictly on its premiere, Black's pledge notwithstanding, Acceptable.TV only manages to make the old tube just a little bit sh***ier."
Meanwhile, Slate comes away with more questions than definitive answers:
"Is the show operating from the snob's premise that TV programming is inherently lame? Is this an attempt to jump-start a catchphrase? Will Acceptable TV's core audience—common-room marijuana enthusiasts, quite obviously—chuckle at it?"
