Jamil's Live Comedy Beat
Last night on the live comedy beat I had a truly outrageous, truly truly outrageously fun time at the UCB Theater NY in the audience for the show "Jem and The Holograms!" I also discovered that I have a new favorite genre of comedy show: "Retro cartoon musical comedy parody" (Please share in comments what cartoon you'd want to be made into a retro cartoon musical comedy parody) This incredibly fun production written and directed by Amanda Allan truly brought the cartoon favorite of the 80's to life. With amazing costumes by Angela Harner and original songs by Tyler Walker the performers had everything they needed to show the power of Synergy, the incredibly powerful holographic/audio synthesizer that allows Jerrica Benton, orphanage owner, to become Jem, rock star. For the Jem ignorant please view the Jem wikipedia page.
Glennis McMurray as Jem/Jerrica Benton and Eliza Skinner as Pizzaz carried the show with their sweet singing voices and sharp comedic timing. Other stand outs were Jeff Hiller as Synergy and Becky Yamamoto as Aja but the whole cast was great. I'm going to stop raving - just go see Jem next time its playing - I know I will.
That one where the dude turns into a car whenever he gets "hot."
