In the beginning, there was chaos. Improvisational comedy was merely the unintended segue between two forgotten lines or the ignorant fumblings of drunken college students on a darkened stage. And lo, a savior did appear, and His name was Del Close, He who codified The Harold and other forms into the sacred arts we know today as longform improv.
Among his flock did issue luminaries from the apostle Bill Murray to young St. Stephen Colbert. Four of his disciples erected the temple known as the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre* in New York City (now with a Los Angeles diocese). To fete the memory of "DC," the UCB throws down a bacchanal of more than 150 shows in a single weekend performed by groups from NYC, Chicago, LA, Boston, DC, Chapel Hill . . . just read the list of shows on the official website.
The insanity begins Friday, July 27th. We'll be plugging particular shows of interest, though if you're a real buff you might as well load up on Festival passes.
*Not to be confused with the Peoples Improv Theater or Magnet Theater, though all are beloved in His Name.
Dirty South would like to thank everyone at the UCBT for another amazing improv marathon. Wait. It didn't happen yet. Amen.
