Tina Fey Says Jon Stewart Has a Case of the Clap… ter
Is there a fake-news anchor feud a-brewin'? Maybe, maybe not. But one thing's for sure, in a new interview with Reader's Digest, Tina Fey said this about Jon Stewart and The Daily Show:
RD: What pleases you more, applause or laughter?
Fey: Laughter. You can prompt applause with a sign. My friend, SNL writer Seth Meyers, coined the term clapter, which is when you do a political joke and people go, "Woo-hoo." It means they sort of approve but didn't really like it that much. You hear a lot of that on [whispers] The Daily Show.
Aw snap! Here's Tina on TDS almost exactly two years ago. See if you can see the burning tension beginning to bubble below the surface between these two:

Huh, when I break out in laughter, sometimes the clapps comes with it. It think it is a natural thing you are conditioned to do as an audience member. I usually never clap unless it is merited, however as an audience member, people are told to do it. So, it isn't that the audience is reacting weirdly, it is that we are told to react weirdly. Does it mean that the jokes are not funny? No. It just means that we are going to clap as well as laugh.
I do think this has a little to do with the fact that Jon had to go back to work in the middles of the WGA strike. She was out on the picket lines.
I think Tina Fey is funny, but not in the same way as Jon. They are not mutually exclusive.
This is heartbreaking, I love Tina Fey too. The show comes on 4 times a night, and it makes points so I agree not everything is burst out laughter. But it's always an amazing show, and it often has hilarious jokes on it. 30 Rock is funnier, but I still like the Daily Show more.
I don't know how she really meant this though.

Writer Allison Silverman discusses the types of jokes TDS tries to avoid:
4. Jokes that will get claps instead of laughs… When a joke becomes didactic, the studio audience will clap instead of laugh. They want to show they support the stance we've taken, but they're not really amused. It's labor-intensive but satisfying to take a joke that seems like it'll get claps and alter it slightly till it gets laughs.
