Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert: Saviors of Democracy?
Russell Peterson, a stand-up turned college prof, has some harsh words for the political humor found on late-night talk shows. In his new book Strange Bedfellows: How Late-Night Comedy Turns Democracy into a Joke, he argues that the bipartisan barbs found on The Tonight Show and its ilk might actually be damaging to democracy. However, he's got a different take on the effect of The Daily Show and Colbert Report:
Peterson sees more value in the satirical comedy of Stewart, Colbert
and Maher, whose shows give them more time to develop comedy based on
issues rather than personalities
Meanwhile, No Fact Zone points to an interview on The Moderate Voice, where another professor sings the praises of TDS and Colbert in greater detail. There's really no denying it, brainiacs love Stewart and Colbert.
