70's/80's Childhood Pop Culture Rape Watch: Land of the Lost
If you think 70's/80's nostalgia hit its nadir with Transformers and the upcoming G.I. Joe movie, perhaps you haven't heard of the Land of the Lost remake. Marshall, Will and Holly? On a routine expedition? Only this time with Will Ferrell and no freakin' kids? Believe that.
USA Today has a shot of what the dreaded Sleestaks look like. Director Brad Silberling goes on record about defending the decision to retain a more human look. "There is a sense of humor that I loved from the original show that can only come from an actor trying to negotiate the suit. If it became CG, they'd be too perfect. For the Sleestak to remain in people's memories, it tells you that it was about who was in the suit."
That humor coming from an actor trying to negotiate a suit? Methinks it's called "we worked with the budget we had." And I'm wary of the direction the project is taking. I thought we were done with the whole smirking at 70's/80's pop culture earnestness with Starsky & Hutch. Color me a pussy, but to a little kid back in the day that dinosaur and those aliens were some scary shit.
Marty Krofft, you must be outraged. Oh, here's a quote: "Marty Krofft says nostalgia is a major part of the movie's appeal: 'I think they'll cheer when they see the Sleestaks.'" Marty, noooooo!
