Op-Ed Columnist Begins Another Failed Campaign to Legitimize Colbert Further
Porn-hating gay marriage opponent Maggie Gallagher was initially suspicious of Tim Russert as host of Meet the Press due to his Democratic ties, but grew to be a fan. Now she thinks that the host of The Colbert Report would be Russert's ideal replacement:
"'The Colbert Report' rules both sides of the aisle, because in a
twisted, brilliant technical performance — I still can't figure out
how he pulls it off — Colbert manages at precisely the same moment he
is making fun of conservatism to simultaneously lampoon what liberals
imagine conservatives are like.
Colbert is, like Russert, one of those rare figures who swing both ways in a deeply divided and divisive political culture."
That's an interesting pipe dream (stash that with your Stewart/Colbert '08 t-shirts and slash fiction), but face it, politicians are scared shitless to go on the Report as it is, and that's a comedy show on basic cable. Besides, the man's got mass to attend and Sunday school to teach.
