If you didn't see The Colbert Report last night, then you missed the first American TV performance by Rush in over 30 years. The band is just the latest in a long line of musical acts who have sought the Colbert bump though, so here's a retrospective of Colbert musical performances, beginning with last night's.

The Tom Sawyer tune has been running through my head all nite, I watched it Wednesday nite but didn't catch the whole show, so made sure to watch it again Thursday nite, and wasn't the stage set really awesome too?

Even tho I'm 60 yrs. young, I still rock (tho now I just rock sitting in my Armchair in front of my old Big Screen T.V set! I loved RUSH 30 years ago, they're just as good now. And they don't try to act like they're still young age-wise, which some Artists do that makes me cringe with embarrassment for them (can u hear me Madonna & Keith Richards?) :)

@Devon Kirk: stop watching, because obviously you're an idiot who doesn't get it

Is it just me or is Devon Kirk a clueless moron?

He's a Neutral Milk Hotel fan! Thats awesome! I really hope he could get em together.

Him coming out early was a joke on the songs length. Colbert is supposedly a very good musician, as you can see in his duo with Willie Nelson he has at least some of the very basic chord structures down.

Also, it's rumored he's a Neutral Milk Hotel fan, so for the love of god reunite them with your power.

Dear Devon Kirk,

I have a feeling that bit was a gag. Just a hunch.

Love,

Me

OMG Dude, RUSH totally ROCKS! I saw their Exit Stage Left concert in the early 80s and it was (to this date) the best concert I ever saw! Unreal!

So much awesomeness in the world.

But don't forget Stephen's duet with John Hall! I honestly believe that one might have changed the outcome of an election.

Why do musical artists go on this dumb guy's show?? For the millions who Colbert stumble into the middle of the climax of RUSH's Tom Sawyer last night (and many more millions who will see it here) you just have to get a kick out of Colbert's utter cluelessness. And then to see him jerked back offstage with the invisible umbrella cane, LOL, hilarious!! Geddy was having a hard time containing himself. I'd tell my producer "one more minute of the song. YOU run out there and tell 'em we have to take a break now". Jeez what a laughable TV moment for the ages.
