Colbert_11I'm not sure what you'd called someone from Canton, Kansas. Cantonian? Cantonite? Either name sounds like a race of aliens from a lame Superman comic. Regardless, Canton-dwellers are up in arms about the July 30 episode of The Colbert Report, in which Stephen Colbert called their quaint (i.e. boring) town a "shithole." Personally, I don't see what the big deal is. I believe "shithole" is proudly emblazoned on all New Jersey license plates. But according to the Kansas City Star, some Cantoniblonians are barn-burning mad. Take for example, Bill Seidl, the local school superintendent, a profession usually known for it's hearty sense of humor:

Bill Seidl, the local school superintendent, wasn’t laughing. He said he hadn’t heard of Colbert, figured the show’s ratings must be low and had no plans to watch.
“Unfortunately,” he said, “some people make a living on being negative.”

I guess his school district doesn't teach a sense of humor. This "nontroversy" (that's my pet-name for controversies too cute to be called by their proper name) was kicked up when Colbert insulted Canton, Georgia, referring to it by his own pet name, "crappy." Colbert promptly apologized, claiming he had simply mixed Canton, Georgia with Canton, Kansas, stating of the latter, "I would say that we should convert it to a landfill, but that would be insulting landfills."

The relevant Colbert clips, as well as a hilarious CNN video of Canton's reaction after the jump.

The First of the Colbert Canton Chronicles:

Colbert Apologizes to Canton, George, Insults Canton, Kansas:

And Last But Not Least, CNN Video of Canton's Reacting to Colbert's Insults

Choice quote in the CNN video, "I would kick his booty."

May I submit Canton, NY for consideration? It's got a crappy community college, a wannabe Ivy League university/party school, winters temps of -40 degrees and a town full of backwards-ass country fucks.

(I went to school there and grew up half an hour away, so I know whereof I speak.)

Please keep this nontroversy going so this frozen sphincter of a town can get its proper shout-out!

Too bad Colbert hasn't taken up the Governor's challenge. (Or perhaps he just favors "modern" jails). It's been four days and counting since Kathleen Sebelius invited him to come and spend a night in the historic Canton jail. Not a peep from Colbert…

He should've gone after Canton, Missouri. Now there's a real shithole.
