Vh1's "The Cho Show" marks Margaret Cho's second foray into television after her no-win situation comedy "All-American Girl" sent her on a self-destruction streak in the wake of network exec assholery. Rebounding with "I'm the One That I Want" (the book/stand-up show/concert documentary) she went on to build a massive following with her frank sexual talk and go-to impressions of her mom.
Along the way her stand-up has intertwined with her social activism and recent fascination with burlesque theater, which brings us to the curious beast of her upcoming "celebreality" series. Judging from the supertrailer above you can expect plenty of hi-jinx with her little person assistant Selene Luna, elbow-rubbing with fellow comedians Joan Rivers, Wanda Sykes and MadTV's Bobby Lee, a "random" Gary Busey sighting and intervention-style confessionals. Finally, and certainly not least, her much-imitated parents get to speak for themselves.
And now, "Speaking as an Asian" soapbox time:
The show goes out of its way to express Margaret's ambivalence with Korean and Asian audiences. "And Asians thought I wasn't Asian enough." Well, yeah, constantly making impressions of your immigrant mom will do that for you.
End soapbox.
The show premieres Thursday 8/21 at 11pm.
There was a comic who headlined last minute when Cho didn't show up. He opened with 5 minutes of her material. From that point on she became known as Margaret No Cho.
I can't wait to not watch this!
