Earlier today, a New York Magazine article speculated on the similarities between Tracy Morgan and his character on 30 Rock, Tracy Jordan.
says Morgan, pushing his green tea aside. (“That don’t look like tea.”)
‚Äú…People, it‚Äôs called tel-lie-vision! You have to be highly intelligent to get away with a dumb joke. That takes a pretty smart fella.‚Äù
Yeah, New York Magazine! They are obviously completely different. For one thing, Tracy's last name starts with an 'M' while Tracy's last name starts with a 'J'! Their names are completely different!
caricature and self-aware actor… ‚ÄúI
feel like a young girl whose body is just developing. I’ve got some
nice tits, a nice ass, a pretty face … everyone want to fuck me”—then
his tone darkens. ‚Äú…It‚Äôs
heavy-duty in my community to reach the level I’m at. For the past few
years, I’d been feeling very alone, and that’s dangerous.”
The best thing about any interview with a 30 Rock cast member is how they often alternate between quick-witted, then honestly candid without any pretension of fame. As a blog writer, even I have pretensions of fame, and I'm only slightly less famous than Tracy Morgan!
a joke… He
found a mentor in Baldwin. "…Alec was the main
one counseling me. He’s a passionate dude,” says Morgan.
What's interesting about this quote is how the actor's personalities mirror their characters. On 30 Rock, Alec Baldwin's Jack Donaghy is a supportive mentor to everyone around him. Obviously, no performer on any sitcom can be completely identified with their character (With the exception of ALF. That guy ate cats like cats were going out of style).
But maybe the reason Tracy Morgan, Tina Fey, and Alec Baldwin are often compared to their TV counterparts is because the situations emanate from honesty. And maybe that's what separates 30 Rock from a host of other network sitcoms (again, excluding ALF).
