NYCF: Katt Williams at Carnegie Hall
Friday night’s Katt Williams show at Carnegie Hall was the place to be with reporters clamoring at the door and Chris Rock and Talib Kweli among the attendants. Opener Wil Sylvince, rocking a jaunty hat and Obama T-shirt, warmed up the crowd with a high-energy set. Brit Gina Yashere showed up for a surprise guest appearance and wooed the crowd with her accent.
This past week leading up to the show has been a wild ride for Katt Williams. The interweb was abuzz with rumors of his dying in a plane crash, and the night before the show, he missed a scheduled appearance on Late Night with Conan O’Brien. Almost immediately after arriving on stage, Williams told the audience he had been released from jail less than an hour ago. When one audience member shouted, “I love you,” he responded, “I love you back… and possibly tonight, ‘cause I just got out of jail,” before sensually thrusting against the stage.
Throughout the show, Williams discussed the election with pride, describing Americans voting in Obama as the “greatest gift white people ever gave us.” He also opened up considerably about his own personal life, citing a nervous breakdown he had last year.
After December 31, he claims, he’s giving up stand-up comedy and seeking a change in his life: “I’m gonna do more film, more TV, spend more time with my kids.” At the end of the night, the always unpredictable Williams switched gears and performed a rap, then whipped off much of his clothing, throwing his jacket, shirt, and assorted bling into the audience. He descended from the stage, sought out a handicapped fan and took pictures with her before finally disappearing amidst the crowd.
