Show Report: Russell Brand's Comedy Central Special Taping
This past Thursday and Friday Russell Brand filmed his one-hour special for Comedy Central at The Museo del Barrio in front of a live audience and me.
I wasn’t really sure what to expect, only having seen his VMA performance which went… um… which seemed to gain him an equal amount of admirers as adversaries. But Russell showed us that with rising from the ashes of awkward situations comes the best comedy routines.
First let’s talk about the set. The stage was furnished like a sultry boudoir. Lots of red velvet cushions, pillows, gold trims, a medieval looking chandelier. Was I at a comedy show or a belly dancing recital?
After a threatening announcement that no one would be able to use the bathroom during the show, I settled into my seat with a water bottle ready to tempt the fates. Soon the lights went off and Russell pranced onto the stage in some of the tightest pants I’ve ever seen and signature hair pouf. He explained the theme of the show was "Macabre, Twisted, Innocence," which doesn’t sound funny, but it was.
Russell jumped right into some riotous diatribes of fame (he has it in England, not in America), the VMA’s (complete with a reading of his most hilarious death threats), and of course romance, Russell Brand style.
I laughed especially hard at his reasoning why homeless people are like wishing wells, the news that Fox news had a poll to throw him out of the country, his application of Foucault philosophy to promise rings, and the dilemma of meeting LL Cool J. Quite the gamut of comedic material for someone who looks like their groin circulation is in jeopardy.
Anyone that couldn’t make it to the show will have to wait until the it airs ambiguously in 2009. For those that did make it, I hope you all get reimbursed for those pregnancy tests.
