Days after the 9/11 attacks, the American satirical newspaper the Onion published an entire issue devoted to it. Among the notable headlines: "9/11 Hijackers surprised to find selves in hell," with all sorts of pungent and hilarious descriptions of what the devils had planned for them.

I have trouble seeing what's offensive to Indians about Americans calling the people who attacked India mother***s and a**holes. Isn't that what most Indians are thinking about them right now? Strikes me as more comedy solidarity than anything.

How would Americans have felt about jokes regarding 9/11? There are plenty of American comics that have already had that routine for years.

Yes, John Stuart has a comedy show. Yes, they are all motherf*ckers, and we're angry about it. I think we share the same views about terrorists as the Indians. Is the tragedy funny? No. Can we try and laugh about how we hate senseless violence? Sure, it's a coping mechanism.

That's a commonly-held belief – in fact, I believe it turns out that the explanation you've been given (although it makes sense) is created to fit the phrase rather than the other way around.

In fact, the meaning of the phrase is that "having to make an exception proves that there was a rule there to make an exception for".

For example, "children allowed into this theme park free this Saturday" 'proves' that there's a rule that children aren't normally allowed into the theme park for free.

Hope that makes sense.
