You may think it is humble to layoff workers, cut back waste spending like jets and have CEO's on $1 wages but it is too late. Why wait until it comes to a head before doing these changes? There fear isn't surving, it's covering the cost of the pensions. Well too bad, someone has to hurt. Better off cutting the Government credit line then propping up another losing market. Some company will buy them and a large chuck of the employees will remain, not much hurt for a better end result.

They can only blame themseles.

Jon Stewart has a point. Look at digg and look at all the financial CEO bonuses. I'd rather give money to people who are doing there best right now by redoing their business by getting rid of waste cost like private jets, getting rid of employees on standby and even saying that they will work for 1 dollar a year to make things right when banks in bailout like AIG will go on a company vacation and spend half a mil. To me I go with the way lesser evil.

His argument is fairly sound (and of course, one should take his comedic rants with a grain of salt), but in the grand scheme of things, the American car industry has been in a down turn for a lot longer than the financial industry. At least if the car industry fails, a new one can arise with a (hopefully) better business model. Furthermore, the effects on the overall economy of an entire financial system failing is far more significant than a car industry failing.
