If you like Comedy Central shows but always wished you could clearly see each and every pore on Cartman's face, you'll be pleased to learn that a high-definition version of the network is hitting TVs today.
native high definition, including almost 30 past episodes of the Emmy®
and Peabody® Award-winning "South Park," the first two seasons of the Emmy®-nominated "The Sarah Silverman Program" and countless hours of stand-up, including the most recent season of the channel's "COMEDY CENTRAL Presents"
series, and a number of original and acquired stand-up specials, as
well as acquired films. In addition, upcoming new seasons of network
stalwarts "South Park" (season 13, premiering March 11) and "RENO 911!" (season 6, premiering April 1) and the series premiere of the epic series, "Kröd Mändoon and The Flaming Sword of Fire" (series premiere April 9) will be presented in native high definition.
The Emmy® and Peabody® Award-winning network mainstays, "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" and "The Colbert Report," will initially be upconverted for COMEDY CENTRAL HD but will be broadcast in native high definition sometime in the future.
HD is just a fad? are you kidding me? I guess we're all going to go back to dial up internet too, huh?
HD is here to stay, idiot, and 4k is next, put down the banjo and join the real world.
When is Time Warner going to carry this?
Why is such a huge and popular network so behind on HD compliance?
This is great news, for people who have the right fuckng provider! When will it be available on AT&T U-Verse?! I'm waiting!
took them long enough..
This HD stuff is just a fad. Mark my words, people will be screaming for their old TV's in just a couple more months!!
Upgrading a studio to HD is a big task – as mentioned, its not just the cameras, but the set especially needs to be updated to stand up to the scrutiny of HD.
There really was no argument for spending a couple million on HD equipment until they had established HD placement on major carriers, since they are cable-only and do not do OTA.

Guys, I'm really impressed that the comments have actually been interesting and informative, as my initial, and to date only reaction has and remains: HD? HDz NUTZ!

Great, now Comcast can raise my bill by another $5 when they decide to get it.. It's comcastic.
It's in SD for the time being because these productions need to upgrade a bunch of equipment in their studios, not just cameras.
I gotta agree, it sucks balls that the daily show and colbert report aren't already in HD. But at least they're on the way
I think the press release at least vaguely answers most of your questions:

Congratulations on Comedy Central finally going HD. However, speaking for legions of fans of The Daily Show and Colbert Report, we're astonished and disappointed that those programs will remain in grainy standard definition. Why is that and when will those shows adapt 20th Century technology? Also, until they do go HD, will they be shown in pillar boxed 4:3 format or HD-standard 16:9 aspect ratio? Finally, what is the date for launch of ComedyCentral HD on DirecTV?
