St. Patrick was a foreign evangelist in Ireland when the island (which evidence suggests was snake free in the post glacial era already) and the legend may refer to his driving out the serpent symbolism in the Druids belief system of that time. Don't disss the snakes. They're cool. So's Jeff Dunham.
