Despite receiving more votes than all other candidates by an overwhelming margin, "Colbert" may not end up gracing NASA's new space station module. And to add insult to injury the beleaguered agency is considering a consolation prize that is inarguably shitty.
As it became clear that "Colbert" was likely to win the popular vote, NASA insiders told SPACE.com, agency personnel floated the idea of naming the station's new toilet "Colbert."
NASA spokesman John Yembrick said the Node 3 naming decision would not be made until April and that the "highest voted names" were receiving the most consideration.
"As for the toilet rumor, we don't want to flush away any goodwill by announcing something before we are ready," Yembrick said.
This is obviously a foolish move on NASA's part, but what else is new; they still haven't put a man on the Sun. And it could certainly be worse. When Al Gore got the most votes, he didn't even get a toilet out of the deal.
That's right, an Al Gore joke in 2009. I'll take my comedy Pulitzer in cash.
