GYI0000537849.jpgAs you know, Stephen Colbert received an overwhelming number of write-in votes to win NASA's Node 3 naming contest. But, as you also know, the eggheads at the space agency might ignore the will of the people and instead hang the moniker Colbert on a space toilet.

This is obviously serious business, which is why it makes complete sense for a US Congressperson to intervene.

"NASA decided to hold an election to name its new room at the International Space Station and the clear winner is Stephen Colbert," (U.S. Rep Chaka) Fattah said in a statement March 25. "The people have spoken, and Stephen Colbert won it fair and square—even if his campaign was a bit over the top."

All I can say is I'm glad the country isn't facing the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression while also fighting two wars. Otherwise, this Rep. Fattah wouldn't possibly have the time and resources to dedicate to this cause.

I mean, can you imagine if an elected official was goofing around with this kind of thing back when 47 million Americans didn't have health insurance and the country's education system was slipping behind those of barely-developed nations? It would be too absurd for words.

crikey. i read nasas excuse. im australian, and nasa isnt in the space race for me, i dont pay taxes that pay for nasa, (thank god!) so how dare they say that nasa is an international organisation, and try to palm that off as the reason for not using colbert as the node name that was democratically decided upon.
if they proceed with their decision of not naming the node colbert, then it will help to cement the validity of my thought that america is democratic in name only.

And of course the inevitable joke about an elected official addressing something trivial in this time of blah blah blah…give it a rest. I don't know that our government has done anything positive or original for a long time, and that means longer than 8 years. Moments like me help me to harbor the belief that right and wrong are understood at least on some basic level by our elected officials. If only we could tap that raw power for the good of all mankind.

Not only is Colbert a perfectly good French name (hence: international) but did NASA ever ponder why "Serenity" got the most votes out of the official proposals?

Hint: google "Serenity SciFi Channel"
