with the economy in the crapper and life just all round sucky ; don't u think there's need for something that funny and bizarrely inspiring (i mean when was the last time u saw ppl unite for a cause ?) what the hell do the other lame and totally typical NASAish names mean ; but when u see the Colbert; it'd be awesome because in a way it was fighting for a cause : that's not really a cause but still rocks anyway.

Why is everyone so upset that NASA might ignore "the will of the people"? They said as much before voting even began! Just take a look at rule four! Colbert doesn't even fit with the names of the other nodes.

WHEREAS Stephen Colbert successfully stuffed the virtual ballot box and won said competition fair and square (well, square, anyway);
BE IT RESOLVED that said node shall now and forever be emblazoned with the moniker "Colbert" to demonstrate space democracy in action.

First of all, this is not by far one of America's most pressing issues right now. That said, NASA is seriously welching out on their part of the deal. They gave a number of options including a write-in vote. As long as the winning name (regardless of what it may be) does not contain vulgar language or is deemed derrogatory against any person or group of people, I don't see the problem. NASA set the rules, they should follow them.

I understand the scientist's desire to not make a mockery out of the naming process… It's a long standing tradition to name our space hardware with inspirational words. However I think what has been lost here is that Colbert is an inspirational *person* for NASA now. Sure, NASA broadcasts on the cable government channel all the time but how often does it get a mention to the audience demographic that the Colbert Show has? Since his introduction to the contest, I think Stephen has brought a lot of attention to NASA & the ISS and hopefully has inspired someone to go further than just this contest and perhaps look into what will eventually become their career. We will always be able to use a bright (demographic proven) guy in the aeronautics field if we're to maintain the high goals of our space program.

NASA, I love you but sucjavascript:submitform()k it up and take it like man. You've been simultaneously Colbert Got and Colbert Bumped.

Are you serious pixkyll? I want Colbert's name on there too, but if NASA doesn't name the room in the space station after him it is no longer a democracy? That's seems a little intense to me.

answer; yes, im serious. its just another thing that some idiot authority in america didnt think through.
yeah, i know nasa dont give a toss, and i know its not that important and therefore may seem a tad intense. but its just one more nail in the coffin of americas credibility. even though the nail is just a thumbtack.

I think it's hilarious that Colbert won the contest and wouldn't care if they used the name. But why get all worked up if they don't either, for whatever reason? Maybe they think it's a little megalomaniac. Would you be such a supporter if "Trump" won "fair and square"? Or "Paris Hilton"? Or "Xenu" as someone else pointed out? I certainly *would* object to those. So NASA learned a lesson about how silly it is to leave naming up to an internet vote that can be so easily manipulated into a joke. The naming process and the result itself turned into a funny side-story, but nothing to get all in a tizzy about.

The Colbert thing is interesting, and entertaining and for that he deserves the name on the toilet. that's funny. It's not funny to me to see his name for a room on the space station. Why? Because a lot of other wonderful people contribute a hell of a lot of their life to make space travel, research possible. Millions of solved problems by people who contribute to NASA and the mission. They are more deserving. It was a good intention to give the public opportunity to name it, but probably a bad idea in actuality when it's too easy to undermine it by narcissism. I don't care that much about all this, but I think you could pull names out of a hat of NASA engineers and they all deserve the win, quietly unthanked, working in the trenches.

This is ridiculous. NASA has the right to name the node whatever they want. I would think Mr. Colbert would find it hilarious to have a space toilet named after him. Just because NASA is a government entity does not mean that they have to follow the democratic process.
