Last night, Dave Chappelle, the Punxsutawney Phil of the comedy world, poked his head out of the ground, performed for a mob of thousands of screaming fans, and retreated back into his hole, thus ensuring another six weeks of the winter of our discontent. What? Too literary for a comedy blog? Fart McNuggets! Better.
| Dave Chappelle at Pioneer Square |
Rumors that Chappelle was planning an impromptu 1 AM performance at Portland, OR's Pioneer Square started spreading yesterday morning throughout the internets (I hear they have it on computers now!) The comedian showed up with a scrappy little karaoke speaker, perfect for the small crowd he was expecting to show; not so much for the 3000 person drunken mass he got.
Chappelle made some quick jokes about the massive crowd as well as the eminently YouTube-able stripper trying to get Dave's attention on the roof of a Starbucks. Then got the hell out of there before the crowd could tear him apart like he was the first black sheriff of Rock Ridge.
Chappelle thought he was only going to get a hundred people? Seriously? Maybe that's why he's been so reclusive lately. "Gee, I'd sure like to do more comedy, but I don't know if anyone would be into it." DAVE, we're into it! Hopefully his appearance last night will convince him to come out more often.
