Judd Apatow on Going Crazy with RAAAAAAAANDY
The decade is drawing to a close, so bloggers and journalists have been compiling their lists of the best in movies, music, books and TV. Well, when I assemble my list of the decade's best fake comedians from web-mockumentaries spun-off from seriocomic movies whose titles start with "F," I have no doubt in my mind that Aziz Ansari's brilliant RAAAAAAAANDY will be perched at the top spot.
If you ever wondered how Randy went from a bit character in Funny People to a full-fledged phenomenon, Cinematical has a really good interview with Judd Apatow where, among other things, he talks about his motivations behind developing Randy and how he approaches supplemental material in general. Here's a little:
I thought to myself I loved what he does in the movie, and the movie really can't contain everything he could do with his character, so let's make more stuff with Aziz. We paid for that with our own money; we were just so excited that he had come up with this hilarious comedian character that we felt like we had to max out what you could do with it. You're aware it will be fun to put on the DVD and put on the web and hopefully it makes people more aware of the movie, but the main reason I do it is I just find it funny; I just want to see what Randy would do. I'm excited to see Aziz and Jason [Woliner], the guy who directed it, I'm excited to let them go nuts with no restrictions just because that's exciting for me as someone who loves comedy. And people don't necessarily get that many opportunities to do that; it's rare for someone to just write a check to someone and say, "go crazy with Randy!"
The interview is actually the first half of a two-parter that's supposed to conclude today, but you can read the rest of part-one here.
And because it will never get old, there's a RAAAAAAAANDY video after the jump.
