tammy_pescatelli_v9As you probably already know, the Comedy Central Stand-Up Showdown is still showdownin'. In our new feature, The Comedy Central Insider Boilerplate Interview, we will talk to some of the competitors. Yesterday, we posted an interview with Josh Sneed. He had a lot of interesting things to say and I think we all grew as people.

Today, we are going to try something different. That's right. We are not going to post the same interview with Josh Sneed from yesterday again. We are going to mix it up with a new interview with a new comedian because we are crazy like that! Here is our interview with Tammy Pescatelli:

Who are your biggest comedic influences?
When I was a kid, I loved Redd Foxx, Rodney Dangerfield, Carol Burnett and Eddie Murphy. I snuck an Eddie Murphy tape in the house and hid in my closet to listen to it. My modern day influences are great friends, people like Dom Irerra, Kathleen Madigan, Rocky LaPorte and of course my husband, family and the world in general.

When did you decide to become a comedian?
I didn't know I could be a comedian, I just loved comedy. I used to have a fake ID to sneak into the Cleveland Improv (Sorry Mitch). One night a saw a woman on stage as an MC. The next week I did an open mike and I was hooked!

What was your worst gig?
I remember a corporate show years ago that started two hours late and then when I finally got on the tiny platform and podium (yes, podium that they had set up for me) the owner's son was so drunk that he kept coming onto the stage trying to hit on me. Everyone there knew that he was an idiot, but were to afraid to tell him to stop, because he was the owner's son. I did the typical stuff to try to stop him but then he puked at the front of the room and the show was over. They wound up trying to sue ME because I didn't do all of my time.

What was your best gig?
Camp New York, an Army base on the Iraqi border. I was doing a USO show and these soldiers just started coming out of the desert. Thousands of them. They sat on their vehicles. They sat on the sand. They were just so happy to see anyone from home. A sand storm came and knocked the lights over and they didn't move. So I didn't stop. I just had them turn the lights on the vehicles and the show went on. They stood up for me at the end. Me? I am humbled by you and your service. The commander of that base is now at another base and asked them to "adopt" for the Showdown.

If you weren't a comedian, what would you be doing?
Getting fired- a lot. I have no marketable skills left.

What's the funniest thing you've ever seen on the internet?
I do a joke in my act about punching people in the dick. There is a guy in Britain who actually goes around doing it. It is hilarious. Of course, I have a 12 year old boy's sense of humor.

What's the funniest thing you've ever seen in real life?
Harland Williams put a chicken finger on a woman's head seven years ago, when we were playing at the West Palm Improv. He never explained it or addressed it- just went on with his act. That lady sat there for thirty minutes with the chicken finger on her head and never took it off. Hysterical! Harland is one of my favorites to watch.

How do you think comedy will change in the coming years?
Funny is funny. I think that anyone can get an audience in the club- once. But you are really going to have to be funny and likable to have them keep coming back, time after time, in this economy.

Who are your favorite underrated or up-and-coming comics?
I love Greg Warren and Christina Pazsitzky. I think that Rocky LaPorte and Dov Davidoff should be household names.

What's your advice for someone just getting into comedy?

Get on stage- a lot! And you better love it, because you are going to be broke for a while. Also, do not compare your act to ANYONE else's. Humor is subjective and when all these comedians tear others down, they hurt our whole industry. ANYONE doing well, is good for comedy, whether you like them or not. Work on your act. Other people may get opportunities before you, but if you are funny they can't stop you. Remember comedy ceases to become an art when your rent is predicated on it. It's all a business at a certain level.
