Comedy Central has just ordered up ten episodes of Workaholics, a new scripted series from the internet sketch group Mail Order Comedy. Based on their web series 5th Year, the show will follow a group of recent college grads who now work together as telemarketers. That's right, a TV show based on an internet show. What's next, a movie based on a comic book?
Anyway, here's some more information on the announcement:
The 10-episode half-hour weekly scripted series set to premiere this summer stars Mail Order Comedy’s Blake Anderson, Anders Holm, Adam Devine and several episodes will be directed by Kyle Newacheck. Kevin Etten (“Scrubs”) has signed on as showrunner and executive producer.
“This pilot was one of the great surprises waiting for me when I arrived here,” said [head of original programming and production Kent] Alterman. “These guys have a unique comedic sensibility that they’ve applied to a very relatable experience – that delicate time between college and becoming a responsible adult. For me, that period lasted for decades.”
“Things have been happening very quickly and we've finally upgraded our underwear to breathable mesh,” said Anderson, Holm, Devine and Newacheck. “We've got a daunting task ahead of us, but we've got a leg up with our built-in Web audience of 35 people – Shout out to BashirH, Eqseep and AwesomeCoolGuy2."
