I don't think I'm going out on a limb by saying there are a lot of stereotypes about "black comedy." That it's blue, dumbed-down and loud. But comedy fans know the world of black comedy is far more complicated than that. Whether it be Bill Cosby, Redd Foxx, Richard Pryor, Chris Rock, Dick Gregory, Dave Chappelle, Patrice Oneal, Bernie Mac or Katt Williams, black comedians have shaped our country's sense of humor. Until we get a 15-part Ken Burns-ian sprawling doc series on the subject, we'll have to make do with the documentary feature Why We Laugh. Good thing it looks pretty good!
The film was directed by Robert Townsend and was based on the book Black Comedians on Black Comedy. I guess I'll have to check both out.
