Stephen Colbert and The Decemberists are embroiled in the most confusing fan-based green screen contest fight ever.

"In a particularly saucy move [in response to Stephen's Second Green Screen Challenge and accusations that the band stole his contest idea], our folk-prog monsterpiecers have issued not one, but two Colbert counterchallenges!!"
In the end, after the headache of trying to figure out who's challenging who subsides, it's the fans that win. Here's what you're going to get:
1. More Colbert Green Screen videos
2. The Decemberists 'mulching' Stephen set to their song "O Valencia!"
3. A healthy portion of guitar shredding

This is a toughie. I love Colbert and I love The Decemberists. I don't know which side to choose! However, regardless of the outcome, I hope this all ends with The Decemberists being guests of the show.

the decemberists are HORRIBLE... stephen colbert is HILARIOUS he is gonna win this HANDS DOWN because Stephen likes ROCK and TD sounds like a toilet flushing!

oh, c'mon! steven was the orginator of the challange, why should that yupie band (whom i've never heard of untill steven mentioned them tring to take away the glory that is the colbert report)... they need to be stopped, and steven is the man to do it. COLBERT FOR PRESIDENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you've probably never heard of the decemberist b/c you probably only listen to pop-culture produced music that clear channel feeds to you. THEY'RE AWSOME. i agree with Kate. hope to see the band on the Report soon!

The decemberists? Haha, this would be even more amusing if a good band was stealing from colbert. But as all good bands are talented and original, well, they wouldn't be in that situation in the first place. Colbert described the band perfectly on the show and I couldn't agree more. I honestly wouldn't be shocked if colbert was a better guitarist.

If you take half a turn in the indie rock scene you would have heard of the Decemberists. You might not like their style, but you can't say they are untalented or unoriginal, every member of the band plays like five bloody instruments!
I see no losers in this whole thing, I can't wait to see Stephen in their new video and I also hope this ends with them on his show!

Listen, neither Stephen Colbert nor The Decembrists are being original with this Green Screen challenge. Remember the kid with his light saber? That's where all of this came from. And as far as the originality of such a contest, it's been done by zefrank dozens of times all ready.

As a musician who listens to a very wide variety of music, I can say that there are few artists around, in any genre, that are as solidly entertaining, as The Decemberists, on record or live. Colbert is damn funny, but I don't yet have all of his albums...or singles. But BAND#44749-1 on local K%@& is great too.

to say the decemberists suck makes you sound like such an ignorant tool. try reading their lyrics or listening to the instrumentals of their music, its extremely original and intelligent unlike the shit thats all over the radio. i'd sugest you go listen to Nickleback rather than watching tonight if you still feel this way.

i am a HUGE decemberists fan.
and if you think they have no talent, try going to one of their concerts. youll see about 16 different instruments played extremely well.

I am a big fan of the Colbert Report, but I was only motivated to check out the web site and post because the Decemberists Challenge episode was so lame. Really, I thought he might cop out somehow, but I was hoping he would put up a good challenge.
PS I hate the Tek Janson episodes....

Yeah the shred off episode was the biggest disappointment of my life. On a side note, the majority of the posts on this thread have shattered my illusions about the intelligence of Stephen Colbert's fanbase. I did get the distinct impression, however, that Colbert is something of a Decemberists fan and this was a stunt motivated by the fact that the Decemberists recently released their first major label album.

However, I'm gonna have to say that the Shred-Off went to the Decemberists, if only because of the lame copping out on Stephen's part. The Decemberists, after all, are not a "shredding" type band. Although their guitar is at times fairly complex and involved, they don't really lean toward the "wicked solo" genre.
Chris Funk did play decently, but you could tell it was improvised and, frankly, I know plenty of kids in my high school who would have put him to shame. But, as I said, they aren't a "shred" band.

I hate the vocals in the decemberists. Is it just me or does it sound like that crazy scientist from the simpsons. Not that i like that show either but the voices sound similar to me, and that drowns out all the other band.
