The 10 Biggest South Park Geek References

May 6, 2008 AT 03:34PM | Comments (22)

While South Park has created a diverse set of cultural icons, such as the Talking Christmas Poo and Underpants Gnomes, true geeks love the show for its sci-fi, gaming and internet references. Insider wants to share our favorite moments that have caused nerds to forever rue the day they purchased that rack-mounted Linux server instead of TiVo.

10. Make Love, Not Warcraft (episode 1008)
References:  MMORPGs in general, World of Warcraft, and anyone who actually knows what MMORPG stands for.

Who wouldn't want a sword with 120 damage per second?

9. Starvin' Marvin In Space (episode 311)
References: Return of the Jedi, Empire Strikes Back

Sally Struthers, who looks and talks like Jabba the  Hutt, has Kenny frozen in carbonite. For the sake of the children.

8. Mecha-Streisand (episode 112).
References: Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla

Barbara Streisand becomes a mechanical beast with a desire to control the world. She can only be stopped by Mecha Robert Smith. We hope to hear their duets album soon.

7. City On the Edge Of Forever (episode 207)
References: Star Trek

Just as we saw in the original Star Trek series, a nameless character in a red uniform is devoured and forgotten like last year's Halloween candy.

6. Towelie (episode 508)
References: Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy

The very stoned towel, who admits to being the "worst character ever," reminds the boys, "don't forget to bring your towel".

5. Guitar Queer-0 (episode 1113)
References: Guitar Hero, the musical stylings of Kansas

This flawless look at everyone's favorite simulated guitar game has only one drawback: you will have Kansas' Carry On My Wayward Son stuck in your head for 6000 years.

4. Trapper Keeper
References: Terminator, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Akira (clip NSFW if work has an issue with softcore cartoon sex, and if they do, switch jobs.)

As Cartman is absorbed with the hyper-technological Trapper Keeper, he swells into an enormous blob, just like the character Tetsuo in the groundbreaking graphic novel Akira.

3. Canada on Strike (episode 1204)

References: Painful Internet fads

In one room, the boys encounter every Internet fad your parents have emailed you in the past year. Wait, you don't remember Star Wars Kid? Yes, I did just do that.

2. Good Times with Weapons (episode 801)
References: Street Fighter

After buying weapons at the county fair, the boys are transformed to Manga-style Ninjas. Sadly, we are forced to see Cartman's over-enhanced manga-man boobs.

1. Imaginationland (episodes 1111-1113)
References: Everything

Somewhere, someone will develop a drinking game based on how many characters they can identify from horror movies, video game, tv shows, or sci-fi movies that appear at a blinding pace in these three episodes. Here the Council of Nine meets, in a scene reminiscent of the Council of Elrond from the Lord of the Rings. Even here, Butters is dressed freakishly like Aqua-man.

Recent Comments

Glaringly absent from the list: Episode 1203 "Major Boobage," the parody of the classic HEAVY METAL animated film. From use of the original rock soundtrack to the spot-on reproduction of HM's unique animation style and design, this is one for the ages, right up there with the Warcraft ep.

Extra points for weaving it around a drug abuse theme and "The Diary of Anne Frank."

Also Cancelled, which was both a parody of Contact. They're like deciding which puppies to keep - we love them all!

also: Heavy Meal isn't exactly a GEEK reference, per se.

The Council of Nine reminds me more of the Jedi Council than the Council of Elrond.

Jedi Council is not a bad call, but the scene is set up with an image that looks like it's straight out of Rivendell

In number seven, the monster is a Shadow from Babylon 5. What is wrong with you people?

Posted by Drywall | May 7, 2008 9:48:31 AM

Moses in Jewbilee is Master Control from Tron. Time to add more! Also, is Towelie a reference to HGttG? I think in the commentary for Towelie they said the character was conceived when somebody told them, "don't forget your towel!" while they were going swimming on vacation. I don't remember them saying it had anything to do with HGttG. Does anyone know if this is right?

i love the Canada on Strike episode especially the Gopher shot...amazin work!

Yes, Heavy Metal is a geek reference. A music geek, even a Metal geek, is still a geek.

You missed something there. #2, Good Times With Weapons, is more or less a parody of Dragon Ball, specifically Z. Did you forget the episode?

Posted by | May 7, 2008 2:25:39 PM

Not the Lord of the Rings episode - huh?

Not the 2 parter where Cartman is Buck Rodgers?

Nope, Jabba the Hutt Sally Struthers. That's fantastic work.

Posted by SomeCapn | May 7, 2008 2:34:23 PM

You should have made referance to the fact that alot of the soundbites from the show come from Heroes of Might and Magic. Id say thats pretty geeky.

Posted by Apostle | May 7, 2008 3:00:29 PM

actually the council of nine semms to refer to the occult group

Posted by me | May 7, 2008 3:38:38 PM

the entire cripple fight in the first episode with jimmy is a recreation of a fight in the cult movie 'They Live'
tho i guess you could argue that as more obscure than geeky

Posted by anon | May 7, 2008 4:44:26 PM

What about the Total Recall parody in the episode with the Big Ski Race?!?!

"Quaid, start the reactor!"

I need a montage!

Posted by | May 7, 2008 5:20:53 PM

the fight scene in "Cripple Fight!" is a reenactment of the fight scene from They Live.

Posted by FredNorris | May 7, 2008 5:55:38 PM

"Good Times with Weapons" also has aspects of "Fist of the North Star" in there.

Posted by Aunt Jomama | May 7, 2008 8:45:20 PM

What about the Terry Schaivo themed episode where Kenny saved the Mormon-run heavan from Satan's minions by virtue of his superior "heavan vs. hell" video game playing prowess? You can't get any more geek than a reference to the Last Starfighter.

You can't forget the Lemiwink's episode. A reference to the original cartoon version of "The Hobbit" is even worse than anything to do with Lord of the Rings.

Posted by Lemiwinks | May 7, 2008 10:01:19 PM

MMORPG: Massively Multi-Player Online Roleplaying Game.

Oh, you actually knew? Never mind. (Looks awkwardly down at shoes and tries to think of something to say.)

Carry on my wayward son
There'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry no more..

Damn it...

Posted by Ryan | May 8, 2008 4:40:11 AM

Screw you guys, I'm going home.

...also, "Awesome-O" was jacked from an episode of Mork & Mindy.

That is all.
