(In celebration of the best year for comedy in recent memory, and also sort of because of the 12 Days of Christmas or whatever, we've chosen 12 comedians and comedy teams we think broke out in 2007. Each weekday, we'll celebrate one comedian or comedy team we got really into this year. (Note: because we'd like to focus on comedy you can go and see live, in person, nobody in Judd Apatow's crew is going to be on this list, even though they are also awesome.)
The comedic musical duo Hard 'N Phirm has been creating refreshingly intelligent comedy for years now, and 2007 has kept the boys super extra busy. In the past twelve months, Mike and Chris have performed regularly with the Comedy Death Ray gang, taped an awesome Comedy Central Presents (airing next year), and released their hit album Horses and Grasses on our very own Comedy Central Records label. Unstoppable, you say? Quite possibly.
Below, a video of their popular Spanish love ballad, El Corazón:

The word "amazing" gets thrown around quite carelessly these days, which is unfortunate. Because seeing Reggie Watts perform is a truly, truly amazing experience. Eugene Mirman's description of Reggie's act is dead-on: "Amazing and unlike anything you have ever seen. Unless you have seen a comedic stream of conscious operatic beat-boxing marvel. Then it's like that."
There are a lot of videos out there showcasing Reggie's awesome voice and kinetic stage presence (like the one below, from a recent show in Chicago), but to truly appreciate the talent and genius of Mr. Watts, you really need to get off your ass and go see him live for yourself.

One of the most talked about young comedians (he's only 25!) John Mulaney was everywhere this year! Best Week Ever, I Love the 30's, in "Oh, Hello" along with Nick Kroll. Here he is in a memorable performance last summer on Conan:

Whether it was performing with the all-chick comedy team Variety SHAC, doing solo stand-up, or starring in her own SuperDeluxe show "All My Exes", this was a breakout year for tiny dynamo Chelsea Peretti. Here she is in the first episode of All My Exes:

12 Days of Breakout Comedians: Day 3: David Wain
Wait, what? David Wain, a "breakout" comedian? In 2007? Let us explain: this is our list where we can choose anyone we want, and this year our beloved David Wain was not only everywhere promoting his (fantastic) summer comedy, The Ten, but he totally broke out as a WEB VIDEO STAR with his hilarious series, Wainy Days. In honor of that, here's one of our favorite episodes of Wainy Days: Tough Guy:

12 Days of Breakout Comedians Day 2: Nick Kroll
We've been Nick Kroll fans for quite a few years, but between his starring role on ABC's Cavemen, his alter-ego 'That's So Raven!' craft services coordinator Fabrice Fabrice, and his regular appearances on shows like Best Week Ever and Human Giant, this has definitely been Nick Kroll's most break-outy year. Check him out as Fabrice Fabrice, below:
