Gallagher Teaches Us How to Make Pickled Whorebread

March 18, 2008 AT 05:46PM | Comments (2)

Comedy_gallagherOkay, we're a little late on this one, but you'll have to forgive us. We've been sifting through the INCREDIBLE tales of the Gallagher show last Friday, and it certainly leaves us both wishing we were there, and incredibly grateful that we weren't.

Thanks to our friends at The Apiary and The Comics Comic and their detailed accounts, we've been able to piece together some terrifying highlights from the evening, which include a recipe for "pickled whorebread." We'll save that for the end.

-Since Gallagher could not sell out the 300 seat theater, an opening act of four comedians took the stage and endured constant interruptions from Gallagher himself, who tried to steal the spotlight at one point by taking off his shirt and wearing a goofy hat. Pictures here.

-Gallagher alienated and eventually removed a chatty couple in the audience. This did not resolve itself quickly, and led to a showdown between the irate boyfriend and Gallagher. Footage after the bump.

-According to Gallagher, "This is the smartest show you'll ever go to." This was in the midst of his apparently low-brow set filled with jokes about gay people and handicaps, and prior to his smashing things with a large wooden mallet.

-And here it is: Early in the evening, when the first opening comedian was doing his set, Gallagher rushed up and advised him to go right for the jokes, and then gave an example. "How do you make pickled whorebread?" Gallagher asked. "Dill dough."

Keep an eye out for resident roaster Jeffrey Ross in the role of Sarah's flack.

Since we posted about Sarah's appearance at Sunday's VMAs, the Comments section has been heating up. What's your take?

NY Times Talk Recap: Ricky Gervais and John Hodgman

May 21, 2007 AT 06:18PM | Comments (0)

Seona_dancingThe New York Times threw its second annual "Sunday with The Magazine" series of chats yesterday (5.20.07), and a small contingent of Comedy Central Insider staff attended to find out "What Makes Us Laugh" with Ricky Gervais and John Hodgman.

The event was held in the illustrious CUNY Graduate Center auditorium in the shadow of the Empire State Building. Among the highlights:

John opens the proceedings by pouring a sample of bottled water into Ricky's glass. Gervais does a perfect wine-taster's nose/swish/slurp/spit to the side.

Hodgman gives an introduction by way of Gervais' "Wikipedia entry," which lists such pre-Office jobs as tinsmith and crime-solving Anglican priest.

(More gems after the jump)

Update on John Mayer: COMEDIAN

January 9, 2007 AT 02:54PM | Comments (1)

The Apiary points us to a report on the ongoing saga of rocker John Mayer's experimentation with stand-up comedy.

We haven't personally seen John Mayer do stand-up, but we would like to add two things to this report:

1. One of us met him once (in 2004), and he was really normal and cool and nice, and if we remember correctly, a fan of Mr. Show.

2. Mayer didn't just jump on the comedy bandwagon yesterday. Hellloooo? Remember when he helped Dave Chappelle determine the musical preferences of different cultures on Season 2 of Chappelle's Show? No? Here:

Klaus

Just in case anyone hadn't heard the cliche, comedy is still the new rock: late last night, popular music blog Brooklyn Vegan announced a new weekly comedy column, 'Klaus Kinski's Comedy Canon' and judging from the first one, it's gonna be awesome.
