Demetri Martin to Star in Ang Lee's Taking Woodstock

May 2, 2008 AT 02:38PM | Comments (0)

Demetri Is Demetri Martin on a rocketship to stardom or what? He's got three studio projects in the works already and now Variety says he's in talks to star in Ang Lee's upcoming movie about Woodstock:

Film is based on Elliot Tiber's memoir, which is being adapted by Focus topper James Schamus. Tiber wrote the book -- which was published last year -- with Tom Monte.

Martin will star as Tiber, an in-the-closet gay man working at his parents' motel in the Catskills, who inadvertently sets in motion the generation-defining concert in the summer of 1969. Focus is eyeing a late August start date.

Fun fact: Contrary to popular belief, Ang Lee and Spike Lee are not brothers. I think they're uncle and nephew, but will have to check. Developing...

After the jump, check out one of Demetri's recent Trendspotting segments from The Daily Show.

Comedy Fans: Stop Recording Stand-Up!

Dead-Frog discusses the annoying trend of douchebags recording stand-up comedy sets and putting the video on the internet. The comedians (Sarah Silverman, Michael Showalter Ian Black (oops, we know the difference. Honest mistake!), Demetri Martin and surely many more) make a very good argument against fans doing this.

Will Ferrell to Tour with Awesome Standups

December 6, 2007 AT 12:09PM | Comments (8)

Semiproposter433_2 You may have heard that John C. Reilly is doing some sort of movie theater concert tour to promote Walk Hard. Well, it looks like his pal Will Ferrell is also getting in on the non-traditional movie promo bandwagon. Ferrell is going to be embarking on a comedy tour to build hype for his upcoming basketball comedy Semi-Pro:

Thesp will headline seven shows over three weeks in February, teaming with leading standups Zach Galifianakis, Demetri Martin and Nick Swardson. Event, dubbed "Will Ferrell's Funny or Die Comedy Tour Presented by Semi-Pro," will kick off Feb. 4 in Kansas City and serve as a promotional run-up to the Feb. 29 release of the pic.

In addition to tubthumping "Semi-Pro," event will also help hype FunnyorDie, which will have a video crew tagging along throughout the tour.

Variety has more details, but so far the dates haven't been announced.

Demetri Martin Entertains the Bookish and Quirky

November 20, 2007 AT 12:56PM | Comments (0)

Demetri The University of Chicago was to host a performance by The Decemberists over the weekend, but the band had to cancel at the last minute (I assume the glockenspiel player sprained his horn-rimmed glasses). So who should come to the school's rescue and fill in? None other than Daily Show correspondent and standup Demetri Martin. It sounds like it went well:

After riffing on the University (“the only school I’ve ever been to where there’s an argument over what the mascot is”) and Mandel Hall (“the lights across the ceiling are great—it’s like the inside of a gay whale”), Martin launched into his routine, a unique but effective combination of traditional stand-up and lo-fi multimedia.

The jokes ended up being perfectly suited to the bookish, quirky U of C audience. Peppered with puns, historical allusions, and references to mythical creatures, Martin’s act struck a chord with the crowd, which laughed giddily along with his wordplay.
