Interview: Jon Benjamin

April 18, 2007 AT 01:00PM | Comments (2)

Jonbenjamin From Dr. Katz to Home Movies to Freak Show, Jon Benjamin has established himself as one of the funniest dudes in the history of the universe of all-time ever. Yesterday Gothamist had an interview with Benjamin, and it went a little something like this:

What are some projects that you're currently working on?
Right now, I’m working on a cartoon for Superdeluxe with my friends Matt Hall and Patrick Borelli called Thunderpoint. We’re producing three episodes that more specifically renders your next question moot.

Do you plan on getting involved in online programming, like Superdeluxe? In the future, which medium do you think people will look to for comedy?
Ha. Told you. In the future, there will be very little comedy left, except for that ‘Tater Salad’ Guy who’s brain will be preserved. But, there will be f**k powder, so it will balance out.

In a previous interview, you said that you started writing at sixteen. What was your writing like at the time and how did you develop that skill at a young age?
I wrote extremely pretentious poetry. In my last years of high school, I ran with a very poetic crowd. I started reading Blake, Keats, Tennyson, Rossetti, the pre-Raphaelites and I wrote poems ripped off from them with titles called, “The Tear” and “Stone Fields”, which regrettably was about a cemetery.

Were you often injecting humor into your school assignments?
I did write a college essay once where the question was, “Who would want to have lunch with and why?’ and I wrote this long essay about me wanting to lunch with Hitler and we would go to this swank outdoor restaurant we would have this wonderful lunch and in the end I would point and say, "Adolph, look," and he would turn around and I would slip poison in his drink. I did not get into college.

Jay Bakker vs. David Cross

December 13, 2006 AT 03:03PM | Comments (3)

Bakker Davidcross_1

Maybe it's the beard (and the glasses), but has anyone noticed how punk preacher Jay Bakker could be the brother of comedian David Cross?

And that's not where the similarities end:

Jay Bakker... spoke about the Immaculate Conception at his church in Georgia.
David Cross... was conceived in Georgia.

Jay Bakker's mother is a real freak show.
David Cross is the co-creator of the TV show Freak Show.

Jay Bakker... tries not to proselytize.
David Cross... preaches to the converted.

Jay Bakker's first book is called "Son of a Preacher Man: My Search for Grace in the Shadows"
David Cross's first album is called "Shut Up, You F**king Baby!"

UPDATE: Well, BrooklynVegan took notice last week for one...

David Cross Covers Cover

Davidcross

In a single stroke of genius, David Cross has seized upon the comical-musical-interweb zeitgeist and covered the infamous Bank of America cover of U2's "One." Check out this footage from the Modest Mouse show (thanks to moonlighting law student/culture blogger AngryCitizen) featuring Johnny Marr of The Smiths(?!) fame on guitar:

Another prescient fan snagged this reel of Cross' cover from the Hot Tub variety show. Rocketh the f**k on, Dave.

Jon Benjamin at his Sarcastiest

November 14, 2006 AT 01:12PM | Comments (0)

Freak Show co-creator Jon Benjamin wrote a guest editorial for Junkiness.com based on the urban legend "true" story, "The Daughter of a Soldier."

The [Other] Daughter of a Soldier
H. Jon Benjamin

Last week, I was at the Atlanta airport returning home from a very important conference when I heard several people clapping behind me. I immediately turned around and witnessed one of the greatest acts of patriotism I’ve ever witnessed, and I’ve seen a lot of patriotic things in my life. For instance, I’ve seen a child beaten to death for letting the flag touch the ground on Flag Day. (Note– There is no better sacrifice to this great country than the death of child.)...

Comedian Guest Blogger Julie Klausner: She's So Comedy Central

October 19, 2006 AT 11:18AM | Comments (0)

Smiley1

(Comedian Julie Klausner will be guest blogging every day this week. You can read more of Julie on her blog.)

I’m starting to get a little concerned about people not thinking I’m “in” with Comedy Central.  I mean, sure, yes, fine. I’m blogging for them. And certainly, everybody knows that I’m sleeping with Carlos Mencia (If you’re impressed with his mind, you should see his dee-de-dee!). But how many of you know about my extensive project-based involvement with the network that once featured classic programs such as Women Aloud, and Short Attention Span Theater? Allow me to give you a walking tour.

Did you know that I work on the new Jon Benjamin/ David Cross animated series, Freak Show? It’s true! Watch video of my bosses getting in tip-top shape for the ordeal that is voicing Siamese twins Tuck and Benny on a semi-regular basis!

Check me out in the Sailor Hat on the Motherload series, I Love The 30’s! As Broadway Ingenue JoJo Bryson, I have plenty of ignorant comments to share at a chipper, breakneck pace about Bonnie and Clyde, the Great Depression, and other decade-appropriate topics.

Is that enough to prove my CC cred? Or must I dig up memories of my blocked-out experiences as background talent on Insomniac with Dave Attell? Oh, why did I think that signing a release after a fourth Kamikaze shot was a good idea….?

Sneaking In: The Freak Show Premiere Party

(aLive from New York is a comedy blogger and party enthusiast. Last week, he snuck in to the Freak Show premiere party. This is his report.)

...I headed over to the Cake Shop, where my friend Erik was playing. He told me there was a private party next door at Pianos, hosted by David Cross. When I saw Jon Benjamin, Jon Glaser, and Janeane Garofalo standing outside, I realized what was going on...

Freak Show premiere party! I introduced myself to Jon Benjamin, who has been one of my comedy idols since Dr. Katz, and congratulated him on the show. He asked if I was coming in to watch it live (it was 10:10 at this point) and I told him my friend was trying to get us in but wasn't sure if he'd be able to. "Don't worry about it," he said. "I'll put you on the list. What's your name?"

And suddenly I gained entry to another exclusive party where I didn't belong. But I didn't care if I belonged or not. I wanted to see the show. Oh, and did I mention there was an open bar?
