Classic Comedy Review: The Night Gallagher Tried to Go Latin

April 7, 2008 AT 05:18PM | Comments (0)

GallagherbigGallagher, comedy LEGEND, is on tour. It says so on his website. The Legend thing, as well as the live show dates. Anyhow, in celebration of his "Gallivanting" tour, may I direct your attention to Ken Levine's blog, where he's reprinted a review of a show from 1999. Since the gig took place in Cerritos, CA (that's in Los Angeles county for all you non-Californians), Gallagher decided to "spice up" his act for all the Latino locals.

Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez's of the LA Times' was there to record the carnage. Among the worst/best bits:

"Man gathers audience volunteers for Mexican hat dance. Says 'Tengo un muchacha' over and over. No one laughs. Man says 'Culo, culito' until people laugh. Man says 'moco' for extra humor. Man is tired of trying. Man says in English 'I need a beer.' Man curses under breath off mike, but audience hears anyway.

Man begins dumping buckets of food onto plates. Man stops trying to speak Spanish. Man gives up and speaks English. Man says: 'We were expecting a big crowd tonight and we're going to do a show for a big crowd anyway' because the crowd is small and shrinking. Man is booed again. Man yells: 'It's the Fourth of July weekend, you don't got no place to go so just shut up.' Man hits Pop Tarts with tennis racquet. Man says 'Un muchacho quiero comer,' which means 'I want to eat a boy'and the boys look scared."

Gallagher the rest of the report here: Gallagher is muy mala!

Gallagher Teaches Us How to Make Pickled Whorebread

March 18, 2008 AT 05:46PM | Comments (2)

Comedy_gallagherOkay, we're a little late on this one, but you'll have to forgive us. We've been sifting through the INCREDIBLE tales of the Gallagher show last Friday, and it certainly leaves us both wishing we were there, and incredibly grateful that we weren't.

Thanks to our friends at The Apiary and The Comics Comic and their detailed accounts, we've been able to piece together some terrifying highlights from the evening, which include a recipe for "pickled whorebread." We'll save that for the end.

-Since Gallagher could not sell out the 300 seat theater, an opening act of four comedians took the stage and endured constant interruptions from Gallagher himself, who tried to steal the spotlight at one point by taking off his shirt and wearing a goofy hat. Pictures here.

-Gallagher alienated and eventually removed a chatty couple in the audience. This did not resolve itself quickly, and led to a showdown between the irate boyfriend and Gallagher. Footage after the bump.

-According to Gallagher, "This is the smartest show you'll ever go to." This was in the midst of his apparently low-brow set filled with jokes about gay people and handicaps, and prior to his smashing things with a large wooden mallet.

-And here it is: Early in the evening, when the first opening comedian was doing his set, Gallagher rushed up and advised him to go right for the jokes, and then gave an example. "How do you make pickled whorebread?" Gallagher asked. "Dill dough."
