Leave it to Chicago to produce a rock and roll duet that's been called "part cabaret, part hardcore punk, and part professional wrestling." If you enjoy your keyboard rock smothered in laugh-gravy with a side order of kickass, you won't want to mys the Mystechs.
[From the official press release]: Chicago's Mystechs has been called "a strange and magnificent, ridiculously weird hip-hop band" (Skratch),"the Evel Knievels of the punk scene" (FM Sound), and "a Spinal Tap of keyboard rock" (Odyssey). This summer, audiences across the United States will get a chance to see, hear, smell, feel and perhaps even taste the Mystechs in all their gonzo glory, as the band tours a circuit of mostly all-ages venues in support of its 8th LP, a hip-hop/r&b/reggaetón workout entitled Escape From Planet Love... The band will also be hawking copies of its first "feature film" - "Warriors & Warlocks: The Movie" - a no-budget sword & sorcery special FX extravaganza based on the group's 2005 album of the same name.
I've seen the show and the band lives up to its promise. You know that heat wave that's been devastating Texas for the past two weeks? It's no coincidence that it began the day this pink-jumpsuited punk-hop duo took the stage.
See the live show:
July 29: Bakersfield, CA / Gigantic Vintage
August 1: Seattle, WA / S.S. Marie Antoinette
August 2: Spokane, WA / Rock Coffee
If you've already missed the show, check out the Mystechs website for not-nearly-as-good-as-the-live-show MP3s and extras.
Tenacious D fans take note: there's more socks-off rock to be found, in the form of TRAINWRECK, self-described as "Classic, southern rock meets alternative...with some Prag [sic] Rock and Country Bear Jamboree in the mix." The band's members include Klip Calhoun, who bears an uncanny resemblance to the D's Kyle Gass and Darryl Donald, who masquerades from time to time as the D's number one fan and personal assistant, Lee.
Summer appearances scheduled:
7/17 -- SACRAMENTO/ORANGEVALE, CA -- BOARDWALK
7/18 -- SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- CAFE DU NORD
