Best of 2011: The Comedy Awards

Posted by:

A year ago, most people would have said we needed more awards shows like we needed more shows about people getting additional holes in their heads (incidentally, don't miss Head-Holers, coming next Spring to TLC). But while we might not have needed more awards shows in general, we did need more good awards shows. And we got one in 2011 with the inaugural Comedy Awards.

The Comedy Awards are returning in 2012,  but in the meantime, here are our favorite moments from the first one:

Stephen Colbert Hijacks Jon Stewart's Speech
I don't know about you, but I'd be way more likely to watch The Nobel Prize ceremony if there was more stage-storming.

Kenny Powers Is the New MFCEO of K-Swiss

Posted by:

Unless you count the time Larry Sanders endorsed Air Jordans (and you shouldn't, because that never happened), I think this is the first time a character from an HBO show appeared in a commercial for another product. Adam McKay apparently directed these spots wherein Kenny Powers (aka Danny McBride) takes over K-Swiss and declares himself the new mother-effing CEO. Put on your headphones, because this is MFNSFW!

There are three other fake short spots of the decidedly vulgar Kenny Powers cologne.

Before They Get Stale: Eugene Mirman, Amy Poehler and Jorma Taccone

Posted by:

Eugene Mirman gave author Alina Simone some advice on how to make her book the bestest bestseller. And then, immediately after doing that, he gave an interview on the intersection between comedy and music. [YouTube, Under the Radar]

Amy Poehler spoke at the Harvard Commencement, "I can only assume I am here today becuase of my subtle and layered work in a timeless classic entitled Deuce Bigalow Male Gigalow." [Punchline]

Jorma Taccone dances to Lady Gaga's Born This Way, dressed the way he was when he was born. [Gothamist]

Gilbert Gottfried went on Late Night to tell Jimmy Fallon one of his favorite jokes. [LNwJF]

A contestant on Australia's Got Talent apparently lifted material from Geoff Keith and British comedian Lee Mack. [The Sun]

If you didn't see this already, something is wrong with you. But I'm going to have pity on you and link to it anyway. Zach Galifianakis interviews Will Ferrell in the newest Between Two Ferns. [Funny or Die]

Adam McKay talks about the new Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Alec Baldwin project, "We want to populate it with people we love… The idea is to bring in, like, 15 people that we love in and just do a big, funny holiday movie." [EW]

Will Ferrell to Be Honored with Mark Twain Prize

Posted by:

Last year, Tina Fey received the prize. Now it looks like her former SNL co-worker Will Ferrell will be awarded the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor (which should not be confused with the Mark Twain Prize for American Mustaches). These last two recipients mark a bit of a departure as the majority of the comedians honored have been comics whose heyday in large part took place in the 70's and 80's.

Comedian Will Ferrell has been selected by the Kennedy Center to receive this year's Mark Train Prize for American Humor. Award will be presented Oct. 23 at a Kennedy Center event to be taped for later broadcast.

Will is a great choice for the award. His work on SNL and his films with Adam McKay more than qualify him for the prize. So what exactly will the ceremony look like? More or less the same, old thing.

The 14 year-old event will again follow its usual format of irreverent testimonials by numerous comic headliners, in this case certain to include a sampling of former "SNL" colleagues, and video clips of the recipient's TV and film moments.

"IRREVERENT?!" How can you show anything but reverence to Will Ferrell? The man drives a dodge stratus! Also, Irreverent Testimonials is the name of my Christian rock band. Start saving your pennies to attend!

Special Access Packages are available at the $50,000; $25,000; $10,000; and $5,000 levels. Single tickets are $1,000 each.

I'm going to buy a ticket, right after I cut food and shelter out of my budget.

After the jump, watch Will Ferrell's appearance from Tuesday's Daily Show.

Hooray! New Will Ferrell as President Bush Video!

Posted by:

Here at your Comedy Central Insider, our feelings about Mr. Will Ferrell are no secret. Because we're egotistical, we'll go ahead and quote ourselves from a recent post about his upcoming Spanish-language film, Casa De Mi Padre: "What is it about this man that inevitably inspires happiness and giddy gales of laughter? Scientists have yet to nail down the precise answer to this question. Until they do, we'll keep watching whatever he does." Which includes, of course, his new mega-hit President Bush video for Funny or Die.

Will Ferrell and Adam McKay Know What Makes a Great Viral Video

Posted by:

Will Ferrell and Adam McKay's Funny or Die video The Landlord has been viewed over 76 million times, so it's pretty clear those dudes know which elements are essential to a successful viral video. But, as Will points out in this uncensored clip from The Comedy Awards, if they'd figured out a way to work some tits and cocks into it, The Landlord would probably have 76 billion views. (NSFW unless you work at Shit, Ass and Beyond)

The first annual Comedy Awards premieres Sunday, April 10 at 9/8c simultaneously on Comedy Central, Spike TV, CMT, Logo, TV Land, VH1 and Nick at Nite.

More Presenters and Attendees Announced for The Comedy Awards

Posted by:

There are just two more days until the first annual Comedy Awards tape at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom. I'll be there live-blogging the big event on Saturday, but more importantly a ton of amazing comedy people are going to be there.

Like, you know how during joint sessions of Congress, they have a designated survivor stay far away, because basically everyone in the line of Presidential succession is in the same room all at once, and a meteor could crash and kill the whole government? Well, comedy should stash someone in a bunker in Omaha Saturday, because everyone is going to be at this thing!

In addition to the talent we announced earlier this week, the newly confirmed presenters and attendees include…

Alec Baldwin
Will Ferrell
Jon Cryer
Garry Shandling
Adam McKay
Samantha Bee
Wyatt Cenac
Jason Jones
Aasif Mandvi
Olivia Munn
John Oliver
John Hodgman
The Gregory Brothers

They will all join Jon Stewart, Ty Burrell, Louis C.K., Stephen Colbert, Rob Corddry, Tina Fey, Bill Hader, Chloë Moretz, Tracy Morgan, Trey Parker, Craig Robinson, Andy Samberg, Matt Stone and Kristen Wiig, as well as musical guests The Lonely Island featuring Akon and house band The Roots at the first annual Comedy Awards.

The show tapes this Saturday night at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom and airs Sunday, April 10 at 9/8c simultaneously on Comedy Central, Spike TV, CMT, Logo, TV Land, VH1 and Nick at Nite.

The Paley Center held panels with the cast and creators of Freaks and Geeks and Undeclared. If you're super sad you couldn't go, at least you can read short snippets and quotes from it. That's almost the same, right? [THR 1, THR2]

If you were worried about Gallagher collapsing on stage the other day, everyone relax! He was released from the hospital and seems fine! [E!]

Chris Elliott talks about wanting to become a dramatic actor, "I honestly don’t think I have the chops for that. I don’t think I have the face for it. I’m just too silly." [AV Club]

Comedy Central and MTV Networks Announce First Annual Comedy Awards

Posted by:

There are shows that recognize the best in film, music, television, pornography and things kids choose, but for many years now, there's been a comedy-shaped hole in the realm of televised award programs. Well, that all changes this year with the announcement of The Comedy Awards, a new annual ceremony from Comedy Central and MTV Networks that will honor the finest comedy in TV, movies and stand-up.

Nominees will be selected by a board of directors, including James Burrows, Billy Crystal, Will Ferrell, Whoopi Goldberg, Brad Grey, Seth MacFarlane, Adam McKay, Jimmy Miller, Jay Roach, Ray Romano, Rory Rosegarten and Phil Rosenthal, and winners will be voted on by members of the comedy community.

The show will tape at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom on Saturday, March 26 and will air Sunday, April 10 simultaneously on Comedy Central, Spike, TV Land, VH1 and Nick at Night. So, even if your roommates are Manswers connoisseurs or I Dream of Jeannie aficionados, you won't have to worry about any conflicts with the TV.

Check back here over the coming months for more details and developments.
