The first time I met my best friend, it was pretty awkward. I was crying hysterically and covered in blood. She was sweating and exhausted, because she'd just finished giving birth to me. Believe it or not though, there are plenty of people with friends who are not their mother. Take Jon Stewart for instance. Many recurring Daily Show guests, dubbed "friends of the show," were not connected to him via an umbilical chord. As we showed you yesterday, Bill O'Reilly recently took to his Fox News show to announce that Jon Stewart is going to Hell. Now, I know what you're thinking: who is Bill O'Reilly to think he knows who is and isn't going to Hell? But, in Bill's defense, I heard he and Roger Ailes play doubles squash with Satan and Skeletor every Saturday, so the dude probably does have a bit of an inside track.

Anyway, as you can see in this clip from last night's Daily Show, the comment did not go unnoticed by Jon.

I don't know about you, but when I see Bill O'Reilly, I can't help but think of Christmas. And maybe it's just because his face reminds me of ham, but the fact remains, when Christmas needs a bloviating crusader, he is there to rouse the rabble on behalf of the downtrodden nearly-forgotten holiday. So, when Jon Stewart hilariously declared war on Christmas this week, it came as little surprise when O'Reilly responded on his Fox News show last night:

Bill O'Reilly admits that he would happily pay a 40% income tax just so long as he knows that the government won't waste that money on poorly-run clean energy companies and overpriced pasties. Which is to say that Bill O'Reilly will never happily pay a 40% income tax.

Chris Wallace, top-billed star of Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace, has called upon the support of his loyal fans for what he anticipates will be a "real challenge as an interview" when Jon Stewart plays guest on his show this Sunday. Excited viewers and concerned citizens alike are calling it "the less awkward version of Jon Stewart as a recurring guest on The O'Reilly Factor."

Wallace and Stewart engaged in a healthy helping of verbal jousting on Stewart's tract last November, closing with the promise that the tables would be turned in DC. If Stephen Colbert takes his cue from Glenn Beck, Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity, then where do they, the handsome defenders of freedom, muster their own inspiration from? According to an interview with the New York Times, Colbert says that for Glenn Beck, it's the 'mad as hell' fictional news anchor, Howard Beale (as well as, of course, Jesus and Gandhi).

Paddy Chayefsky's 1976 film, Network, is Colbert's favorite and with good reason as it seems to have accurately predicted everything about television news today, including what he calls the "I will tell you what to think, and how to feel" approach:

[Beale is] doing it in a quasi-benevolent way, which is, I’m going to remind you that you’re being anesthetized right now. That’s what they get right, in terms of what you see on TV. That is a great bulk of what happens with news now. And not just the nighttime people that I’m sort of a parody of, not just the opinion-making people, but even what is left of straight news. Howard Beale is a precursor of people who are telling you how you feel. That’s what they get right. And things like Sybil the Soothsayer — Sybil the Soothsayer is not that different than [Bill] O’Reilly’s body-language expert.
