Cast Your Vote for Stand-Up Month

Posted by:

Last night in Iowa, thousands of regular Americans gathered together to exercise their right to vote, handing a win to Mitt Romney in the process. Seems like kind of a waste of democracy if you ask me. Thankfully, in honor of January being Stand-Up Month, Comedy Central Stand-Up is allowing you to vote for something truly worthwhile. Just head over to their Facebook page, like it, and you'll be able to vote to help decide which stand-up special will air each Friday this month.

Will it be Chris Rock, Arj Barker, Chelsea Peretti, Denis Leary, Ralphie May or someone else? You decide! Vote or die!

And for more stand-up, don't miss the premiere of Tom Papa: Live from New York this Sunday at 10/9c.

This Week on The Daily Show: Adam Sandler

Posted by:

This Thursday, Jon Stewart's old pal Adam Sandler will return to The Daily Show for his sixth appearance on his program. Adam will be stopping by to talk about his new movie Jack & Jill in which he plays both a man and the man's sister. And no, it's not as sexy as it sounds. It's more sexy than it sounds.

In anticipation of Thursday's show, here's a fond look back at Adam Sandler's Daily Show appearances through the years, beginning with his first back in 2000. I didn't even know they had TV back then!

More Adam Sandler after the jump.

The Daily Show airs Monday through Thursday at 11/10c.

Louis CK Eats Sugar and Sh*ts Alcohol

Posted by:

Do you remember a few years ago when Louis CK was a deep cut in the comedy geek record collection? Now he's super famous, which means any time he does anything, dozens of interviews will follow. One of the nice things about Louis is he makes an effort to not repeat himself too much in his interviews, so they all contain a new and interesting tidbit. Just this weekend he was interviewed by Pitchfork, and it's chock-full of cool things…

As a stand-up, when you watch an open-mic comedian who just started, you get this this nostalgic envy because you'll never be a new comedian again. There's a rawness that somebody who doesn't know what the fuck they're doing brings to stand-up and acting that's really great. So when you write from your gut and let the stuff stay flawed and don't let anybody tell you to make it better, it can end up looking like nothing else.

Keeping the flaws, getting back to the initial energy a young comic or filmmaker has, is something Louis stresses a great deal. If you've seen Talking Funny, it was interesting hearing Louis and Chris Rock championing this approach in contrast to Jerry Seinfeld, who is more of a rigorous perfectionist, holding on to material year after year.

Here's another cool quote…

I'm not interested in other people thinking differently. I don't care. I'm not even educated; it's something that I'm not qualified to do. I'm just like yeast– I eat sugar and I shit alcohol. And there's a huge culture that goes with that. Alcohol creates massive shifts in world history, and it changes people's lives. People get pregnant because of alcohol. But the yeast doesn't give a fuck. The yeast isn't going, "I really want to help people loosen up and bring passion into Irish people's lives."

You should do yourself a favor and read the whole thing. Like I mentioned, there's a ton of CK interviews floating around. I went through the trouble of assembling some I had lying around my browser from the past two weeks: Slate, Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun Times, Variety.

Jon Stewart's Extended and Uncensored Interview with Ricky Gervais

Posted by:

I've never made any bones about my prejudices toward the British. It was bad enough when they taxed the tea without giving the colonies representation, but then they had to burn down the White House and steal Madonna from us too. But it's guys like Ricky Gervais who give me hope that I can someday overcome my deep-seated bigotry. He was on The Daily Show last night, and the segment went long, but here's the complete, NSFW and utterly delightful interview.

After the jump, part two, wherein Ricky show Jon his atheist Easter card.

The Daily Show airs Monday through Thursday at 11/10c.

This Week on The Daily Show: Tracy Morgan and Ricky Gervais

Posted by:

It goes without saying that Jon Stewart is a great interviewer. He could interview the author of a book about drying paint, and it'd be hilarious and insightful. But there are a few recurring guests who consistently go above and beyond, delivering some of The Daily Show's funniest interviews, and this week we get two of them!

But first, the week begins with Foo Fighters, who will be performing a song from their new album, Wasting Light, tonight. Then, tomorrow, it's Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, who will discuss his new book, A Reason to Believe: Lessons from an Improbable Life.

After that, the first half of the one-two comedy punch arrives Wednesday with the return of Tracy Morgan, who was great on The Comedy Awards and is one of the stars of Rio. This will be Tracy's third appearance in about a year's time, which means we're getting a little bit closer to Tracy Morgan being on The Daily Show every day.

Then, before your head has even had a chance to heal from exploding, Ricky Gervais is on the show Thursday to discuss Talking Funny, HBO's upcoming comedy roundtable special which also features Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock and Louis CK.

After the jump, you can watch some of Tracy and Ricky's previous appearances.

The Daily Show airs Monday through Thursday at 11/10c.

Chris Rock Discusses His Broadway Debut

Posted by:

Chris Rock has done just about everything one can do as an entertainer: act in films and television, perform stand-up, direct, produce and write. He even does a kickass sketch on Kanye West's kazillion-selling album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. So what's up next? Why, the theataaaaaaaah, of course!

Chris recently sat down with the New York Times to talk about the evolution of his career and this next big step.

For the last few weeks he has been learning how to walk a stage that’s not his to roam, in preparation for his Broadway debut in “The ____________ With the Hat,” which begins previews on March 15. In the play — written by Stephen Adly Guirgis and directed by the Tony Award winner Anna Shapiro — Mr. Rock plays Ralph D. , an irresponsible 12-step sponsor dodging his own demons by toying with those of his sponsee. He is a tragicomic character trapped in a maze of misrepresentations, and also a jerk.

If you've always wanted to see a play with the word "motherfucker" in the title, this just might be the theatrical experience for you! Tickets are available from Telecharge. Maybe, um, don't bring your mom though. Or do, if she's a badass.

Chris Rock on Louis C.K. and Hannibal Buress

Posted by:

Esquire has a fascinating interview with Chris Rock, where he speaks candidly about insecurity, success and the people he regards as his peers. Here he is on the comics he believes are currently at the top of their game (Spoiler Alert: he's as much of a Louis C.K. geek as you are):

It pays the most, first of all. It's the thing that I can do at a high, high level. Amongst the best. You've got me and Seinfeld and Ricky Gervais and Louis C. K. and Larry the Cable Guy. Louis's the best right now. He just played Carnegie Hall. Louis C.K. is one of the biggest comedians in the country. You know the weird thing about Louis? He's an East Coast guy, been in New York the last 20, 30 years of his life, but the New York cultural elite doesn't like him — too blue-collar, too Sternish for them. It's very much like Howard Stern. And they only give it up to Stern now because of the money.

Chris goes on to say that Hannibal Buress is one of his favorite young comics, so Esquire also did a short interview with Hannibal.
