Flight of the Conchords' Bret McKenzie Writing Songs for Muppet Movie

Posted by:

They've really been pulling out all the stops on this upcoming Muppet movie. There are multiple rumors involving celebrity cameos, including Zach Galifianakis, Ricky Gervais, Paul Rudd, Danny Trejo, Jane Lynch, Jack Black, Lady Gaga, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dave Grohl and about a million other people.

And now word just came through that Flight of the Conchords' Bret McKenzie did some work on the film as music coordinator and even wrote songs for the film

A few weeks back, EW premiered an alternative version of their first look at the film, seen above, which featured Segel & Stoller among the felt-lined cast, along with director James Bobin and, curiously, “Flight of the Conchords” star Bret McKenzie… [Bret's] presence in the picture suggests it would be as more than just a cameo.

And indeed, New Zealand site Stuff confirmed with McKenzie that the comedian… is acting as music supervisor on “The Muppet Movie,” and has written several songs for the film. McKenzie tells the site, “It was really unexpected. We were in the studio recording Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy. It was a very surreal experience.”

The director James Bobin co-created and directed Flight of the Conchords for HBO (before that, he also directed the HBO version of Da Ali G Show) so this news makes complete sense. It seemed odd a few months back when Bret McKenzie popped up in that Entertainment Weekly spread for the Muppets without much further explanation, but I guess this cements his role in the film.

In other major film franchise/Flight of the Conchords news, as we've already reported, Jemaine Clement will play a villian in Men In Black III.

Jon Stewart, Lewis Black and Sarah Silverman Nominated for Grammys

Posted by:

The nominations for the 53rd annual Grammy Awards have been announced, and I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you were once again unceremoniously snubbed. It seems the world remains unprepared for symphonic yodel-ska concept albums about individual episodes of Felicity. Better luck next year.

Meanwhile, many artists were ceremoniously not snubbed, like Lady Gaga, Lady Antebellum and, oh I don't know, Lady Foot Locker? To be honest, I didn't check the music nominees, because I'm old, and I know my place, and my place is the Comedy and Spoken word categories. Take a look:

Flight of the Conchords Grounded

16506419Fans fears have been confirmed: Jemaine Clement and Brett McKenzie will not be bringing their HBO show Flight of the Conchords back for a third season. While HBO was fully prepared to bring the show back, the strain of creating an album in addition to writing a TV show likely deterred the duo from pursuing a third season. Their official website's statement also notes that the two are pleased with the note the show is leaving off on:

We’ve noticed the less we say about the future of the show, the more people want to talk about it, so in an effort to reverse this trend we are today announcing that we won’t be returning for a 3rd season. We’re very proud of the two seasons we made and we like the way the show ended. We’d like to thank everyone who helped make the show and also everyone who watched it. While the characters Bret and Jemaine will no longer be around, the real Bret and Jemaine will continue to exist.

Sigh. You're not crying, are you? Look at you! You're crying. Yes, you are. No, you don't have an inflammation of your tear gland. No, stop it, your eyes are not sweaty. It's okay. C'mere, someone's here to see you. You don't want to see him? C'mon, yes you do. You love him. Look, here he is!
