The Gregory Brothers Are About to Snatch Your Eyeballs Up

Posted by:

The Gregory Brothers have had a pretty great year. They won Best Viral Original at the Comedy Awards. They autotuned the Oscars. They created an app called Songify This. And they are now working on a pilot for Comedy Central. And all from the Internet! All I ever got from the Internet was a cabinet from Craigslist that turned out to be made out of bedbugs and human parts.

The New York Times just profiled The Gregory Brothers and it covers their unique place in the business of show. To paraphrase Britney Spears, they are not quite girl (they are on the Internet), not yet a woman (not on television). But that's about to change…

Among those who agree that the Gregory Brothers have staying power is Comedy Central, which commissioned the band members to create a pilot for a possible TV series that they have been filming this summer. When I asked Kent Alterman, the network’s head of original programming and production, if he thought there were any risks in developing a show around a group of performers who are best known for what might turn out to be an Internet fad, he told me: “If I thought that their only talent in the world was to do ‘Auto-Tune the News,’ then I would probably agree with that. But I feel like their talent transcends that.”

If you were wondering how a series would be made out of short YouTube videos, Kent Alterman also fields that question…

He compared their possible series to a mixture of “The Monkees” and the cult HBO comedy “Flight of the Conchords,” describing it as “a narrative show that has some music elements.”

You should read the whole article. It's interesting for The Gregory Brothers, but also as a little time capsule of what the paths to success in comedy and music mean in this crazy, future digital Matrix dystopia we call life.

PSA: Weird Al Can't Make Your Kids Famous

Posted by:

Everyone wants their kids to be famous. Who doesn't want their kids to lose a bit of their soul before they are fully developed adults? But if you're looking for a celebrity to make your child famous, please pick a celebrity with experience making little kids known worldwide. Weird Al is not that celebrity. Will Smith is that celebrity. Please bother Will Smith at waterparks, and leave Weird Al alone. (Will Smith goes to a lot of waterparks. Boom Shake the Room is actually about Hurricane Harbor in Gurnee, Illinois.)

One thing Weird Al does have a lot of experience doing is making great parody songs. Comedy Central will be airing his new concert event special on October 1 at 9/8c. An extended, feature-length DVD and Blu-ray will be released Tuesday, October 4. Click here for more details.

Comedy Central Teams with Weird Al!

Posted by:

Gen-Xers and the Millennials disagree about a lot of things, from the superior Star Wars trilogy to proper sexting etiquette. But there is one truth held by both generations: "Weird Al" Yankovic is the best! And this October, Comedy Central will be bridging the gap between 40-somethings and tweens with "Weird Al" Yankovic Live!: The Alpocalypse Tour.

The exclusive concert event will premiere on Comedy Central Saturday, October 1 at 9/8c and will be followed by an extended, feature-length DVD and Blu-ray release on Tuesday, October 4. Comedy Central will also debut Al's upcoming music video "Polka Face" featuring parodies of Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Ke$ha, Lady Gaga and more.

In the meantime, here's the video for His Royal Weirdness's latest, "Perform This Way."

Paul Rust, Harris Wittels and Michael Cassady Are In a Band

Posted by:

If I had a little bit of musical talent, I'd immediately start a subway Mariachi band with my three best friends, Chico, Remy and Ricky "Beef Chili" Martinez. Unfortunately, while my accordion skills are terrible, they are not nearly awful enough to be a member of a subway Mariachi band. (Mariachi bands, you just got GOT!) Fortunately, Paul Rust, Harris Wittels and Michael Cassady are much more talented and started a musical group called Don't Stop or We'll Die. Here's their music video for a song about breasts…

Garfunkle and Oates Developing Series for HBO

Posted by:

You're telling me that two adorable musical comedians with numerous TV credits and a huge internet following are getting a development deal with HBO? Get out of town! That kind of thing only happens in the movies!

Comics Kate Micucci and Riki Lindhome have inked a development pact with HBO for a laffer based on the duo's Garfunkel and Oates' musical comedy act.

I've been reading Variety and blogging and linking to stories from them for a while, but I still can't get over the fact that they non-ironically use the word "laffer." You are adults (kind of)! This is not the 50s! It makes you seem like an 80 year-old man wearing one of those propeller beanie hats.

Anyway, this is great news for Kate Micucci and Riki Lindhome. I hope the show, which if I know Hollywood (and I don't) is being pitched as "Laverne and Shirley meets Flight of the Conchords," actually gets made. If it does, Kate and Riki will not abandon what gained them a following in the first place, the wonderful word of the intranet.

Micucci and Lindhome are writing the pilot with thesp-helmer Richie Keen ("Important Things With Demetri Martin"). There are also plans to develop a Web component, should the series be greenlit.

And that's it in "people who are clearly going to be famous seemingly getting closer to becoming famous" news.

Flight of the Conchords' Bret McKenzie Writing Songs for Muppet Movie

Posted by:

They've really been pulling out all the stops on this upcoming Muppet movie. There are multiple rumors involving celebrity cameos, including Zach Galifianakis, Ricky Gervais, Paul Rudd, Danny Trejo, Jane Lynch, Jack Black, Lady Gaga, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dave Grohl and about a million other people.

And now word just came through that Flight of the Conchords' Bret McKenzie did some work on the film as music coordinator and even wrote songs for the film

A few weeks back, EW premiered an alternative version of their first look at the film, seen above, which featured Segel & Stoller among the felt-lined cast, along with director James Bobin and, curiously, “Flight of the Conchords” star Bret McKenzie… [Bret's] presence in the picture suggests it would be as more than just a cameo.

And indeed, New Zealand site Stuff confirmed with McKenzie that the comedian… is acting as music supervisor on “The Muppet Movie,” and has written several songs for the film. McKenzie tells the site, “It was really unexpected. We were in the studio recording Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy. It was a very surreal experience.”

The director James Bobin co-created and directed Flight of the Conchords for HBO (before that, he also directed the HBO version of Da Ali G Show) so this news makes complete sense. It seemed odd a few months back when Bret McKenzie popped up in that Entertainment Weekly spread for the Muppets without much further explanation, but I guess this cements his role in the film.

In other major film franchise/Flight of the Conchords news, as we've already reported, Jemaine Clement will play a villian in Men In Black III.

The Three Funniest Holiday Songs

Posted by:

I don't know if you know this, but it is Christmastime. I mean, technically, the Christmas season officially begins after sundown on Valentine's Day, but things are really in full swing now. And with Christmas comes Christmas music, and with Christmas music comes funny Christmas music. So, how about we countdown the three funniest Christmas songs? I thought I'd never ask.

Elmo & Patsy: "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer"

It's a well-known fact that, when the Feds finally took down Al Capone, it wasn't for murder or smuggling or bootlegging. Nope, it was for making a list of the best funny Christmas songs and not including "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer." Well, I'm not going to make the same mistake and see my meticulously cultivated crime syndicate come crumbling down, so here it is.

Did you know the was a sequel to GGRObaR? It's true. Or, at the very least, it's wikitrue. Somehow 2002's "Grandpa's Gonna Sue the Pants Offa' Santa" has failed to become a cultural phenomenon on the same level of its predecessor though. I guess 9/11 really did change everything. On the other hand, it turns out Elmo is still alive (and divorced from Patsy since 1985), so there's always hope for a killer threequel.

Weird Al Yankovic: "Christmas at Ground Zero"

As prolific as he is, it's no surprise that this is actually one of two Christmas songs Weird Al has released. He's also responsible for one of the best Weasel Stomping Day carols of all-time, but that's for another list.

So what makes 1986's "Christmas at Ground Zero" better than 1996's "The Night Santa Went Crazy"? Well, apart from being first, CaGZ easily top TNSWC in the body count department. I mean, Santa can visit millions of houses in one night, so I don't doubt he'd pull off a hell of a killing spree, but even with magic on his side, I can't see him outdoing a nuclear holocaust. Beyond that, Ground Zero just nails the traditional Christmas pop/rock song. Ignoring the lyrics, you could easily lump it in with the best tracks on Phil Spector's Christmas record.

Mr. Garrison: "Merry Fucking Christmas"

In all honesty, I could have composed an entire list of just South Park Christmas songs. Every track on Mr. Hankey's Christmas Classics is a gem as delightfully offensive as it is catchy, from "A Lonely Jew on Christmas" to "Christmas Time in Hell." But I had to choose just one, so I went with "Merry Fucking Christmas." It not only features Matt and Trey's signature brand of razor sharp satire, but it's a song with "fuck" in the lyrics that you're sure to accidentally find yourself singing in line at the grocery store later today. And isn't that the true meaning of Christmas?

You can find these songs, as well as nine million others on Rhapsody (which is currently offering a free 14 day trial).

Now Available: MC Mr. Napkins – The Album

Posted by:

I consider myself a fan of rap music, I just feel like the genre has lost its way. I prefer the older stuff, back when the lyrics were about obscure names for medical equipment and refreshing fruit drinks. I don't know, call me a purist. Anyway, if you're like me, then you'll want to pick up MC Mr. Napkins' The Album. It's available from Comedy Central Records today on iTunes and at Amazon. There are a couple music videos after the jump, but first you can sample the track "Sphmygmomanometer" with this embeddable widget.

Comedy Death Ray Gets So Many People to Sing We Are the World for Charity

Posted by:

Last year, Scott Aukerman and Comedy Death Ray assembled an all-star roster of comics to perform Do They Know It's Christmas to help the LA Food Bank. This year, with the help of Funny or Die, the ante has been upped and the followup features more comedians, bigger production values and even a more iconic song: "We Are The World." Hey, look, it's my favorite computer to ever wear tennis shoes, Kurt Russell!

You can purchase or download a special Comedy Death Ray XMAS 2010 album (proceeds help the aforementioned LA Food Bank) as well as attend their annual XMAS Nativity Pageant on December 14 at the West Coast UCB theater. A bunch of the information is on the Comedy Death Ray site. Don't be selfish! The world is hungry!
