Watch the Final Stand-Up Month Winners Tonight!

Posted by:

January is almost over. Winter is halfway through and change is in the air. People were born and people died. Flowers wilted and seedlings sprouted. Girls became women and boys became men. Boyz II Men changed their names to Men II Old Guyz. I finally got my period. And the final week of voting for Comedy Central's Stand-Up Month came to an end.

Here are the winners, along with the times their specials will air tonight:

Amy Schumer: 9/8c

Cast Your Vote for Week Four of Stand-Up Month

Voting is at the heart of America's democracy. And that heart is a withering, decaying muscle, barely able to pump blood to its feeble limbs. On the other hand, no it's not. Voting is great, and America is great! Sorry, I get schizophrenic when I have to make tough decisions. I'm trying to choose which comedians to Watch, Like and Follow in order to vote for them in this week's Stand-Up Month competition. The winners will have their specials air this Friday starting at 9/8c.

This week, you can choose between Patton Oswalt, Louis CK, Paul F. Tompkins, Pete Holmes, Anthony Jeselnik, Amy Schumer, Julian McCullough, Sheng Wang and Kristen Schaal. Here's one of my favorite clips from Patton…

It's like Sophie's Choice if I actually knew what Sophie's Choice was about. It's about World War II or something, right?

For more stand-up, don't miss the premiere of John Mulaney: New In Town Saturday at 10/9c.

Experience Summer in New York with Sheng Wang

Posted by:

Anybody who knows me knows I'm against summer. After all, no other season contributes to global warming more than summer. Nope, not even spring; I looked it up. We could save the icecaps in one fell swoop simply by cancelling summer and replacing it with a prequel to autumn. On the other hand, Sheng Wang makes summer look pretty enjoyable.

For more from Comedy Central Park, be sure to tune in to Friday Night Stand-Up July 29 starting at 9/9c.

Show Report: Comedy Central Park

by Intern Ben Orbison

When I first got to the SummerStage in Central Park, the first thing I noticed was how absolutely packed it was. I never expected there would be such a huge turnout for comedy, but then again, I am not that bright.

I procured a small, eight-dollar beer and took a seat on the ground. The man sitting behind me started doing his own stand-up set for the woman I assume was his date. It was gut-wrenchingly awkward. She gave him some pity-laughs, but by the time he was finished, I thought I would never be able to enjoy stand-up again Fortunately, Sheng Wang, John Pinette, and Jim Gaffigan saved me from that terrible fate with three great sets in a row.

Sheng Wang’s laid-back, observational style was a great start to the show. He was so at ease, he made the huge, outdoor venue seem like a small club. Throughout his set (and the others), there was a woman
behind me who would say “so true” after every joke—annoying, but she wasn’t wrong. Every one of his jokes seemed grounded in an everyday absurdity, a style I am partial to. He did about fifteen minutes, and I
definitely wanted him to have more time. Alas, there was more comedy to see.

Comedy Central Presents Speed Dating: Sheng Wang

Posted by:

The word "Wang" makes me think of three things: the fact that it is ranked as the most common surname in mainland China, Wang computers from the 80s and stand-up Sheng Wang. That's where my thought process ends on that word. However, you can continue thinking about Sheng Wang, because his Comedy Central Presents airs tomorrow at 11:30/10:30c. Click past the jump for a promo and a preview clip from his special, and get more bang from your Wang.

What adjective would your mom or best-friend use to describe you?
My best friend would describe me as "sensitive." My mom would describe me as "not bad."

How do you like your coffee/women?

What is your breakfast of champions?
My breakfast of champions: fried chicken and waffles.

Gary Gulman is recording an album for Comedy Central Records at the Comix in Foxwoods this Friday and Saturday. You should go! [Foxwoods]

NBC picked up a multi-camera sitcom pilot from Chelsea Handler based on her book Are You There Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea. She won't star in it, but she will executive produce. [THR]

Sheng Wang describes a totally normal open mic experience, "Once I saw a guy smoke crack on stage and strapped what looked like a homemade bomb onto his chest. Comedians started barreling for the exits. I stayed seated and stoned." [Comic's Comic]

Would you like to purchase a portrait of Seth Meyers for $5,500? He had it made as a joke gift, but then realized that was a lot of money to spend on a joke gift. If you ask me, it's not enough money to spend on a joke gift. [WBEZ]

You can watch Mike Birbiglia living in a Macy's window for a week in this live-stream that Downy set up on their Facebook page. [Facebook]

Did Ricky Gervais graffiti "Ricky Gervais was here" on The Beverly Hilton where The Golden Globes were taped? More importantly, is Ricky Gervais Banksy?! [The Daily What]

Comedy Central Presents Season 15 Preview: Part One

Posted by:

Comedy Central Presents is back for its 15th season and the taping felt like the first day back at school. You recognize stand-ups from previous years in the audience, see some new faces and get hit on by your science teacher (Ms. Zacchi, what are you doing here?) Unfortunately, I wasn't able to watch every set due to the restrictions of time and space. But I did see enough to give you a sufficient overview of the coming season, courtesy of Jokes.com.

Before we get to the main event, acknowledgments must be paid to the warm-up comic Drew Fraser, a previous Comedy Central Presents stand-up. Every night he got the audience revved up with old school dance contests and dating games. You haven't lived until you've seen strangers unironically doing the cabbage patch together.

The first night featured Mike Vecchione, Matt Fulchiron, Kyle Kinane and Tom Segura. These are the comics I didn't get to see. I realize that this information is as useless as a time machine without plutonium (nerd). But I do know that they've been seen on Russell Simmons Presents Stand-Up at The El Rey, Live at Gotham and Last Call With Carson Daly. That should be enough for your fact sack.

Live Comedy Show Tonight to Help Out Hero Comic Doug Smith

Posted by:

Just a few days ago, up and coming New York comedian Doug Smith did something truly heroic. In the 2nd Avenue station, he saw a woman being accosted by a man possibly attempting to sexually assault her. Doug stepped in to help, and the attacker took a box-cutter to his face. Doug now has 25 stitches across his face.

Doug is a funny man and an important part of the alt-New York comedy scene. Additionally, he is a huge fucking hero.

Doug and fellow comic Jessica Watkins run a show called One Trick Pony the second Wednesday of every month. Tonight, at 9pm, Doug may or may not show up (he is getting his stitches removed today), but regardless, the event will become a bit of an impromptu fundraiser to help him pay for his medical bills. Not only will it be a fundraiser, but it will also be a great show. Here's the line-up:

Joe DeRosa (Comedy Central Presents)
Dan St. Germain (The Onion)
Sheng Wang (Live at Gotham)
James Harris (Grab Ass)
Annie Lederman (Living It Up at Life Cafe)

As most of you know, being a comic in New York doesn't come with health insurance, so Doug could use the money. I don't really like to plug some shows over others on here, but I think we can all agree that doing our part to support a young comedian who is not only hilarious and promising, but A FUCKING HERO, is the least we can do.

The show takes place tonight at 9pm at Mr. Dennehy's (63 Carmine St. @ 7th Ave). It's free, but please donate whatever you can to help Doug out. See you there!
