It's been nearly six months since Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Fallon became eternal enemies for six months, and last night there was a light at the end of the tunnel when Stephen made a surprise Valentine's Day visit to Late Night. Then again, maybe that light is actually a trap, and it's coming from a well-lit dungeon full of rabid skunks. Only time will tell.
I'm not so sure former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi wants to be playing with this kind of fire. Or this kind of magic lightning or whatever. Publicly coming out against super PACs has got to be kind of dangerous. But to come out against Stephen Colbert's super PAC? That's got to be like an anti-Colbert Bump times a zillion, right?
I don't know about you, but I'm always a little morose the week after Groundhog Day. I just spend so much time anticipating it and then in the blink of an eye, the best day of the year has come and gone and I'm left waiting twelve months for anything good to happen again. Fortunately, my spirits are a little higher this time around because I get to watch 23 exclusive outtakes from classic Colbert Report field reports.
You can find a playlist of all the clips here and you can also watch all of the original reports and learn additional background info over here. It's not quite as exciting as a rodent-based holiday, but it is pretty damn close.
Slate's courts and law maven Dahlia Lithwick has penned a great rundown of Stephen Colbert's efforts to expose the deleterious effects of the Supreme Court's Citizens United case via his Super PAC ("Making a better tomorrow, tomorrow"). From the article:
In recent weeks, Colbert has run several truly insane attack ads (including one accusing Mitt Romney of being a serial killer). Then, with perfect comedic pitch, Colbert handed off control of his super PAC to Jon Stewart (lampooning the FEC rules about coordination between 'independent PACS' and candidates with a one-page legal document and a Vulcan mind meld). Colbert then managed to throw his support to non-candidate Herman Cain in the South Carolina primary, placing higher on the ballot than Rick Perry, Jon Huntsman, and Michele Bachmann.
I always thought something was a little "off" and "weird" and "Ted-Bundy-esque" with Romney. That jaw line. It's just a little bit too perfect. Yep, serial killer.
The piece goes on to explain how the Super PAC's hilarious antics are having a serious effect on public understanding of the current absurd state campaign finance law in general and the Supreme Court's Citizen's United decision in general. Read for yourself.
Hey there, sports fans, are you ready for the biggest sports weekend of the year? That's right, the Washington Stealth will be facing off against the Buffalo Bandits in the National Lacrosse League tomorrow! You can practically cut the excitement in the air with a lacrosse stick. With that in mind, I wanted to put together a collection of lacrosse clips from the Colbert Report, but I unfortunately couldn't find any, so this roundup of American football-related videos will have to suffice.
So what do you say? NASA is a noble enough cause, right? Visit www.nasa.gov if you agree and give 'em a few space bucks. Astronauts just want to live normal lives like everyone else, except in outer space.
On last night's Colbert Report, Bjork took time away from her life in the Capitol of Panem to sit down with Stephen and talk about her innovative new interactive album and volcano elves. Watch the interview for yourself to find out which of the two Stephen wants to lick.
After the jump, Bjork travels through time and performs "Cosmogony."
On last night's Daily Show, during the Moment of Zen, you saw Stephen Colbert chase after Jon Stewart in pursuit of his Super PAC. But the chase went on much longer, and you can now see the extended segment complete with the thrilling final confrontation in this web-exclusive video. It's pretty much the best deleted scene that doesn't feature Na'vis having sex ever.
Tuesday night, Stephen Colbert aired the first half of his interview with Maurice Sendak, and it was a huge hit. Everyone loved the legendary author's curmudgeonly bluntness, and it really set the bar high for the second half. Well, last night, part two aired, and from it did not disappoint, unless you think talking shit about Give a Mouse a Cookie is disappointing, in which case, you can go straight to hell.
Last night, Stephen Colbert aired the first half of his interview with legendary author Maurice Sendak. As you can see, they ran the gamut of topics from penises to a Where the Wild Things Are sequel. Though, perhaps most striking were the writer's words about Newt Gingrich. The way he talks about the GOP candidate, you'd think they'd been married.
In any event, let the walls become the world all around, hop in your private boat and enjoy:
