I'm not so sure former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi wants to be playing with this kind of fire. Or this kind of magic lightning or whatever. Publicly coming out against super PACs has got to be kind of dangerous. But to come out against Stephen Colbert's super PAC? That's got to be like an anti-Colbert Bump times a zillion, right?

I don't know about you, but I'm always a little morose the week after Groundhog Day. I just spend so much time anticipating it and then in the blink of an eye, the best day of the year has come and gone and I'm left waiting twelve months for anything good to happen again. Fortunately, my spirits are a little higher this time around because I get to watch 23 exclusive outtakes from classic Colbert Report field reports.

How Stephen Colbert's Super PAC Is Changing America

Slate's courts and law maven Dahlia Lithwick has penned a great rundown of Stephen Colbert's efforts to expose the deleterious effects of the Supreme Court's Citizens United case via his Super PAC ("Making a better tomorrow, tomorrow"). From the article:

In recent weeks, Colbert has run several truly insane attack ads (including one accusing Mitt Romney of being a serial killer). Then, with perfect comedic pitch, Colbert handed off control of his super PAC to Jon Stewart (lampooning the FEC rules about coordination between 'independent PACS' and candidates with a one-page legal document and a Vulcan mind meld). Colbert then managed to throw his support to non-candidate Herman Cain in the South Carolina primary, placing higher on the ballot than Rick Perry, Jon Huntsman, and Michele Bachmann.

I always thought something was a little "off" and "weird" and "Ted-Bundy-esque" with Romney. That jaw line. It's just a little bit too perfect. Yep, serial killer.

The piece goes on to explain how the Super PAC's hilarious antics are having a serious effect on public understanding of the current absurd state campaign finance law in general and the Supreme Court's Citizen's United decision in general. Read for yourself.

As we told you yesterday, a recent poll out of South Carolina finds Palmetto State native Stephen Colbert with 5% support in the upcoming GOP primary, putting him a full percentage point ahead of Jon Huntsman. Naturally, the news has many wondering if it's time for Stephen to throw his hat in the ring, and on last night's Colbert Report he made the major announcement that he would make a major announcement about his potential bid on tonight's show.

Choosing Your Colbert: A Reporter Reports

In a post last week, we recommended a lengthy but very worthwhile New York Times article on Stephen Colbert by legendary newsman Charles McGrath. Penned with care and eloquence, the piece explores the many, often seemingly overlapping sides of Colbert's persona and traces the history that got him where he is today, forming super PACs and floating obscene amounts of cash around the U.S. political landscape. Well, we are still recommending it! (If you read like I read and have, I don't know, three days to kill, you should check it out. If you read normal, it'll probably cost a half hour of your time. A paltry price for a superior article!)

As a bonus, yesterday the Times released a little Q&A with the author of to get his impressions of Colbert after the fact:

"My preferred Colbert, and I assume that of most people who know him, is the real Colbert. He’s incredibly smart, funny and generous, and he’s just a decent human being. But periodically I would ask a question and he would start as himself and then turn into the character Colbert as he was answering."

The real Colbert–when we are afforded a glimpse–is indeed hilarious, disarming, and kind. But it's hardly surprising McGrath found him floating back into character. I mean, no matter how nice and smart you are in real life, it's gotta be pretty damn cathartic getting to be this guy:

Colbert Outpolling Huntsman in South Carolina

Last night, GOP hopeful Jon Huntsman finished a distant third in the New Hampshire primary, the one state where it looked like he might have a shot at taking a strong second, which would have given him the momentum to maybe tie for sixth in South Carolina, paving the way for an upset fourth in Florida, which as any electoral historian knows, is the one sure path to the White House.

Well, to add salt to the wounds, a new PPP poll finds none other than Stephen Colbert in sixth place in his home state of South Carolina with 5%, ahead of Huntsman who is only pulling in 4%. It just proves the old adage that you cannot get Colbert bumped ahead of Colbert himself.

The New York Times Gets to Know All the Stephen Colberts

For the most part, one person is just one person. But not Stephen Colbert. He is at least three people. The New York Times just said so, and you can believe them, because as a corporation, they count as at least one person…

Lately, though, there has emerged a third Colbert. This one is a version of the TV-show Colbert, except he doesn’t exist just on screen anymore. He exists in the real world and has begun to meddle in it…

The new Colbert has crossed the line that separates a TV stunt from reality and a parody from what is being parodied. In June, after petitioning the Federal Election Commission, he started his own super PAC — a real one, with real money.

One of the best parts is where they ask Jon Stewart about the inception of the "Stephen Colbert" character.

After Jon Stewart took over… as host of "The Daily Show" in 1999, he encouraged Colbert to make the character more political… At first Colbert resisted a little. “I thought topical stuff had an ephemeral quality — it would be meaningless in a week,” he told me. “I wanted my character to be eternal.”

Stewart said: “What he says is all lies. I didn’t push him, I berated him. If I remember correctly, there was physical punishment.” Then he added, seriously, “It was an attempt to change the editorial environment a little — a question of aiming the flamethrowers.”
